broke my one and only Stupie door key

« on: March 22, 2010, 09:02:08 PM »
For some reason I broke off my door key in my glove box lock.  Its in 2 pieces,  I took em to Hammond jones and they had 3-4 vw  key blanks but not mine.   Is there something special about old VW keys?  SC

There's nothing "special" about your door key . . . it should use the same blank that all 71-79 type 1 and type 3's used, but you probably won't find many hardware stores that stock them anymore.  I think I got the last ones Ace here in LaFayette had about 15 years ago.  I got tired of not being able to find the blanks, and when I did, finding someone that could actually copy one correctly, so I took a locksmith course, got a VW code book and a key machine . . . and eventually bought the contents of an old locksmith shop.  I've the blanks you need.  And if I ever get Homer cleaned out, I might actually be able to get to them. ;)

I have gotten a few keys cut at a locksmith's shop called ACE right across the side street from Bea's restaurant on Dodds ave. It was cheap and he had all the ones I've ever needed... Now if only he could get my keys back from the Shelby County Sheriff who took them when they took the golf cart I acquired in a game of chance and the yamaha golf cart master key I had him copy for me... Too intoxicated to get the keys and run... I could only run... Anyhow...he has golf cart blanks too!
