He worked on VWs for 50+ years. He started at the dealership in '62 I believe. He knew all the tricks. I was fortunate enough to get into VWs just in time to spend a few years being a thorn in his side. He would always tell you to do it the right way in order to get the most success, but knowing how VW owners were, he always wrapped it up with, "but, it's your coal truck!" He knew we'd have to learn the hard way. David "the Godfather" Johnston was a fun old dude who knew a lot about VWs, a little about music and nothing about putting things nicely.

He's also the guy who coined the term the "LaFayette Triangle" for the area the myself and "Smelly Cat" live in.  He said it was like the "Bermuda Triangle" only instead of planes and ships disappearing, all logic disappeared.

This is David "The Godfather" Johnston at Bug-A-Paluza a few years back standing next to the old Southland VW sign from Brainard Road that he work under for several years:

Good to hear!

Ugh... Good luck. Unless you cut a hole in the floor above the tank, you are screwed! You could probably get the tank out enough to swap it out though. You'd still have to remove a good portion of the stuff off of the engine.

I will say this with the experience of having resurrected 4 of these late buses / campers: Your pump is stuck.

Swami says, "a new pump is probably in your future."
Your welcome.

Deck Plate Access Hatch or whatever. They have them at Academy Sports for relatively cheap. It sits flat and screws open with a large 4, 5 or 6" hole. They can also be water tight. The only problem could be the corrugated floor won't be flat to fasten it down well. Think that through!

(they make them in white too)

That one looks good. I like this one:

It has a water tight seal to keep fumes out. The other nice one was the orange one in that thread. It did look factory!

Either way, its your coal truck and you know which skills you possess!

VW evenutally figured this one out.  There is an access port in all the later buses made in Mexico.  Too bad they didn't do this until AFTER they quit selling them in the states.   ::)
