« on: April 28, 2014, 06:26:13 PM »
so coming home the other day, my bus just died.  i coasted over and it would not start up.  i even pushed it and popped the clutch....nothing.

it "seems" like a fuel issue...???
fuel pump, fuel filter,.....

it tries to start but.......well, doesn't.

searching....broke bus dont really help, lol

i can afford parts and can swap parts.....but no clue what to get

please help

feel free to call...i'll be out at the bus,....staring blankly at the underside, lol

The godfather said 95 percent of fuel issues are electrical. It may be fuel pump wiring or fuel injection stuff. Hard to tell without being there. Give some more info on how it died, what you've tried, etc.

One trick would be to drip a little bit of gas down the intake, with the air cleaner off and see if it fires off. Be cautious of gas and spark when doing it though! If it does then its fuel delivery issues. If doesn't then it's electrical. Depending on which one it is, you can start upstream and track it trough!

It's not smarter than you

A bad vacuum leak could also cause the same symptoms. Check all vacuum lines to make sure they are still plugged in, not cracked.

Yep, it should make a whirring noise when the key is turned on.
No noise = no pump workey.
Then you need to back track to the fuse, if it is good then check wires on pump for corrosion.
If you have a spare battery and some leads with little clips then you can hot wire the pump to ground (pump is marked), and then tap the + side with the battery lead to see if the pump is bad.
Your mileage may vary.

No, the pump doesn't come on with just the key. There is a switch in the AFM that activates the fuel pump when the key is on. This is a failsafe that will cut power to the fuel pump in case of an accident and the engine stalls, the fuel pump won't keep spraying fuel.

To test the fuel pump, turn the key to the on position and then move the flap in the AFM open. You should hear the fuel pump kick on. You can move the flap manually by pulling the air box and sticking a screwdriver to push the flap, or pull the top cover off and move the arm. The cover is glued on but it should pull off easily.

If you don't hear the fuel pump, it's either faulty or perhaps the double relay on the firewall.

Moving flap and hearing relay click is a good sign.
This means that the realy is attempting to send a signal to the fuel pump.
You need your helper to do the exact same thing while you set under the bus and listen for the pump to whirr.
No noise = a problem.
Problem could be corroded wires, a short in the wires between the relay (clicky thing) and the pump, or the pump could be shot.
I would check the wires on the pump as they look nasty.
Clean wire ends with a pick and emory paper / emory board (borrow your wifes - she'll love you for it), and clean the terminals on the end of the pump.
IF this fixes your problem go to the autoparts store and get some Dielectric grease comes in little packages at the check out and coat the terminals after the clean up.
You may also have a bad ground wire to the frame for the pump ground.
On the side of the pump that has the "-" mark, follow the wire until you see where it is grounded to the frame or the battery. Check the contact to the battery or the frame and clean frame / connector, once again coat with the dielectric grease.  They make this grease in an can with a little pointy nozzle.  You own a bus that will eventually need other contacts cleaned, so I would just get it and keep it on had for when the next electrical gremlin arrives...

Volt meter. Same thing. See if you are getting power right at the fuel pump. If no, check the ohms between the ground or the bracket (if the pump grounds through the brackets) to the negative on the battery. If no juice or high (more than 0 ohms) resistance, then it's wiring. If everything else checks out, then it's bad pump (likely).
