Broke bus

« on: December 13, 2007, 06:38:04 PM »
I went over to a new friend's house last night for supper in Ft. Olglethorpe.  He has a '71 bus that he had to have towed home from Tellico Plains.  It won't start.  First off, no ignition.  He touches two wires together to start.  When he puts the two wires together, there is a clicking noise in/around/about the coil.  It was dark and I really didn't know where to start.  He said he had replaced the voltage regulator recently (before the breakdown) but the coil was about 7 years old.
I am having a brain flatulent moment.
Any ideas?

What color wires is he touching and location.  The clicking sound could be the "fuel shut off" solinoid on the carb. Its supposed to click when you turn on the Ing. switch. Does the engine "turn over" when he touches the wires together?

I'm guessing he needs a new ignition switch, first off. Or perhaps the wiring is old and has too much resistance for the current to travel all the way up to the switch and back. A hot start relay could fix that.

Could the clicking noise be the fuel pump?

'71 is still Type I engine, no? Where about in Ft. O? I'm close by, and so is Harry Guinn.

The carb solinoid only "clicks" one time when you turn the switch on and off.  He shouldn't even hear it from the drivers seat.
Russ, All Type-2's  71 and back use the Type-1 engine and did not come from the factory with a eletrical fuel pump .
Who knows what kind of deal Travis's buddy has going on with his '71.
Its hard to figure out things when you are not there to check it out.
I suspect when Travis's gets over his bout of brain flatulent,as he calls it,  he will figure it out if the wiring doesn't look like a rat nest God forbid.
The Ing. and starter wiring is a lot like a late Bug.

Yeah, it only clicks once when the wires are touched together.  I haven't been back over there since that dark night.  Color of wires?  Dunno.  And there is a maze of them.
He's near a Bi-Lo and El Matador...I wasn't driving...and it was dark.
The engine did not turn over when he touched the wires that are under the dash together.
When I go back, I'm going to see if the starter is getting power.  My Bentley shows tests for the voltage regulator...when the engine is running.
By the way, his name is Greg and he works at Porter Paints on Lee Hwy.
