Brake line woes

« on: May 03, 2005, 04:52:30 PM »
:x  :-x
Okay, I got my brake drum off the brakes off, the brake cylinder off and the flexible hose off (this is on my front passenger side of my beetle). I cannot however get the metal brakeline disconnected from the flexible brake hose. I used vice grips to hold it on the metal brake line side and after an hour of frustration the nut is now perfectly round where the vice grips stripped it smooth! :x
What can I do? I'm afraid if I try and disconnect the other end of  the metal brake line that it will do the same thing and since it is connected to the master cylinder I'd have to replace the master cylinder.
HELP!!

I assume the fitting you rounded off was the 11mm  fitting that screws into the flex hose ?  They can give you a fit sometimes. You must have had some more worn out vice grips.  Sounds like you are going to have to put a new metal line on . Go get yourselve a sure enough 11mm LINE wrench ( 7/16 inch might do ) made for things like this. Its thicker. Spay the fitting on the master cly. with a little PB Blaster and Bang on the flats of the fitting with a flat nose punch, not hard enough to damage anything,
and it should loosen with the Line wrench. Let me know.

well, the vice grips are brand new, so evidently it has been in there since the factory installed it. I'll try to find that line wrench. I think Herb was telling me about it the other day.
