Bosch 009 Dist - Whats the hype and what comes stock?

« on: June 11, 2004, 03:03:51 PM »
As I look at the magazines I keep seeing the Bosch 009 Distributors.. are they better or suppose to perform better. What is the stock distrubutor.. I know it has vacum advance, but that's about it.. Is it a curve feature, no vacum advance..
Any enlightment would be appreciated?
Thanks
Ron

Well , I guess I will start a war here. The 009 is a pure centrifical(spelling) advance outfit. They work great in some applications and not so good in others. They are part of the reason that people have problems with the PICT 34mm carb. I know the reason , but  I`m not going to get into that right now. Here is another reason people jumped on the 009. At one time you could buy a 009 complete a whole lot cheaper than a new vacumn unit for your old dist. when it went bad. If you have a bone stock engine there isn`t a thing wrong  with the vac/dist. that came on the engine If its good. A timming light would tell you that. They work on some modifieds and not on some others. VW used a cent. dist. on their type 2`s through 1959 and early part of 1960. VWOA called them model 181(not the Bosch # ). Everybody ,including  me thought this was the answer to our prayers back then. Live and learn. 009`s to me are more hype than fix. I`m not saying they are bad, you just have to use them in the right applications and they will work fine. Now I will wait for " incoming fire".

If you have a bad distributor and little or no money to spend, and you are NOT running a PICT 34 carb a 009 will get you going for cheap.  I've used them . . . in fact, I think I have 009s in two of my three running, driving VWs as we speak.  The reason I'm running any of them is money.  You can (or could . . . Bosch recently stopped producing them from what I hear) pick one up for as little as $49 . . . not much more than the points, condensor, rotor button and cap for that old worn out vacuum advance distributor that's started giving trouble after 30 something years of service.  The 009 will work, and it's cheap.  If you want something that WORKS WELL, you'll have to spend a little more money.  Maybe a lot more money.

Just a bit of advice about what you read in the magazines . . . they are in the business of selling advertizing and magazines.  If they tell people not to buy parts advertized in their magazine, they can't sell ads.  The price of the magazine would go up significantly.  People would stop buying the magazine.  They would go out of business.  Don't get me wrong, there are sometimes great tech articles in Hot VWs . . . and a while back, there were a few good ones even in Trends.  You just need to take what they say with a grain of salt.  Just 'cause you read it in a magazine doesn't make it true!

That's cool, I can see going that route if your going big carb, Maybe..
My only intention is to get electronic ignition.. Pertronix, Compu-Fire, etc..have no reason to go 009, if I'm staying stock..Was just curious...Are we also saying the stock Dist is higher priced than the 009?  Sounds like there a another alternative for our stock dist, besides the 009, or was I reading into the messages wrong?
I know on my 1975 BMW 2002, we had advance & retard on the dist..you could plug the retard.for a little better performance.
thanks for the answers, you guys are great, getting two cents worth of advice and no war what so ever..
Hope everyone has a great weekend..

Here's an option if you're looking for a stock type distributor.  I've heard nothing but praise for this distributor from the people that have actually installed one . . . it cost about 2 1/2 times what a 009 does, but it may well be worth it:

What makes this distributor so unique is AirCooled.net has tailored the advance curve to different specs. for different carbs.  It's not an off the shelf, one size fits all deal.
