Body Color: Design Issues: 80 Vanagon

« on: July 09, 2006, 08:17:12 PM »
Okay... I am in a quandry (sp).

I am restoring my 80 vanagon and cannot make up my mind on a few issues.

The body is in rough shape, so a full paint job is in order... So, while I was at it, I have pulled the full interior (not original upholstry) and am going to spray every bit of body metal (interior and exterior). There is no way to go factory on the entire interior, so should I stray from the exterior color as well...

Just give me some feedback and please use the attached poll for color options.

I tend to believe that what is yours is yours and you can do whatever you want to do with it.
But being a "stock" kind of guy, I tend to stick with what is "stock".
Out of the stock colors you have listed, I like the Blue and Ivory...maybe more the Ivory than blue.
But, I voted to do what you want to do. :)

:D I like the ivory "personally" of the ones listed. However I totally agree with Gobusgo, the choice is yours and yours alone. When the color for our car was picked out there was some questions of how it would look. Even Charles Overton who did the painting had his questions and he has painted many a VW over the years. However Josh never waivered in the color choice and the final result is great. So make youself happy it is your vehicle. Good luck and keep us posted with some pics of the progress!!! So I vote: Your Choice

I remember going to a wine tasting "deal" a long time ago and got an answer from an expert that you wouldn't expect.  Showing my lack of knowledge on the subject I asked what kind of wine would one serve with whatever I was thinking of at the time. His answer was "What kind of wine do you like ? "  Worked for me !

Look at it this way. I would be all over you like a "Duck on a June bug" if you took ,lets say a restorable 1949 split window bug, slamed the poor thing down on the ground, chopped the top, cramed a turbo 10 carbed 2.5 litre engine in it and wheels wide enough to cover 2 lanes of freeway.
My thoughts on this sort of "doings" if it be a "Louie 14th" table or a collectable VW, Don't do anything that you cannot reverse or put back stock.
With all that said,Its still your coal truck and you can do whatever you want to with it.

Thats kind of the way I see it... Paint is paint... I can always remove/recover later if I want the factory look.

This bus is very special and alot of memories are in it. I jsut want to get it back in the campgrounds again....

Here's my two cent's worth - If I understand the situation, you own it and your grandfather bought it new, right?  It's obviously a vehicle you have some emotional attachment to.  It's rough now and you want to put it back on the road and in the campgrounds . . . and have it look good doing it . . . basically, giving the vehicle it's self-respect back?  Whatever color you "feel" will best acomplish this is the right color.  I really doesn't matter what everyone else thinks.  And like you said, paint is paint.  IF you decide 10 years down the road that maybe you made a mistake and it would be better in the original color . . . another paint job then is going to be cheap compaired to doing nothing with it now waiting 10 more years to start restoring it!

Good luck with it!

Like the Godfather said, "It's your coal truck" (This is one of his favorite sayings) and like Zen said, "Paint is paint". If you did something that was irreversible it might change things but just a color change won't hurt anything. Ask yourself, what would Grandpa say? since it came from him. But,you paint it the way you want it and like you said, get it back on the road and in the camp ground.

Do what you like. You can't make everyone happy but you can make yourself happy. I don't think anyone around here can say nuthin about it. I remember a purple DC somewhere....any ways Herbs got a rainbow of vw's and nobody seems to go with anything bland around here.
