Blinker question.

« on: October 26, 2010, 12:10:07 PM »
Well, i have checked with Tri State in Cleveland and the others around here for the emergency flasher switch that came apart in my new beetle. They do not have them and said that getting them is impossible. The question is does any one have one that will work for me before i have to pay $50.00 from Mid America for a new one or is there a way that it can be wired without having it attached and the blinkers / driving lights working.

Quick update. I just went out and " fixed " the top back on the emergency flasher switch. Now when i pull it out to flash i get a full light up in the speedometer but no flashing. Any possible thoughts about the problem ?

FYI....

Be EXTREMELY careful "fixing" the terminal boards on hazard/ headlamp switches.  They have a hot power source directly fed to them, if they come apart, they can arc on any metal something... the fuel tank is in the trunk,,,, get what i am hinting at???

I have seen bugs burn to the ground because of faulty headlamp and emergency flasher switches.

BB's are out/ misplaced in the housing.
ASBugs was like that when I got him.
I got mine from Alvin in Dalton, $15.  Even had the zip ties all ready on it to hold it together.  Putting it in is a PAIN.

I also have seen the leftover's from home rebuilt switches . Just replace the dang thing and be done with it. As KC said they can be a bitch to put in sometimes but its a lot more fun than rewiring the dash or worse, replacing the car. A lot of times I took the radio out and that eased the pain somewhat.

I hear ya Rick on the " fixing " of the emergency flasher switch. I will replace it when i can find it somewhere. I guess i will just have to check all the wires and take it step by step till it is working.I had this problem on the 69 beetle i had and got it working. Or just take it to Rick or Rick at R&M and let them do it right !!

Another update. I have the hazard switch working great now. When i pull the switch on the hazards blink as they should. The headlights work great and the left rear light comes on. Now i have to get the right light to come on and the blinkers to blink. Any thoughts would be helpfull

Work some small Zip ties around the Hazzard switch to keep it from seperating.
Just remember that there are no insulators over the hot wires on that switch so do not arc it out.
Good luck.
On the rear light, check the wires on the inside of the bulb housing (take off light housing) and see if your getting a ground and if the connections are corroded.
Good to have another early Super!

Ok let me see if i have this correct. The power can either go through the emergency flasher switch or the turn signal switch. But if the emergency flasher is pulled out and all the lights left and right flash, then the emergency flasher switch, bulbs and grounds etc are ok and thus it works. This would leave only the turn signal switch too being bad. All the wires are connected correctly from the turn signal switch and to the two T2 connectors under the frond hood. If i figure all of what i have said is true then i need to get a new turn signal swich to correct this problem right ?

Newest update ! Well i went out to the bug with new thoughts about the fixing the lights problem and about 4 minutes later i had all the lights working except the blinkers. Everything seems to be correct but i will recheck it all and then replace the turn signal switch or just dive it without turn signals like i did with my 69 beetle for 6 months.
