Bent shaft on my air cooled lawnmower,

« on: June 18, 2008, 08:35:30 PM »
Sad day,   my kid tried to mow some big rocks.  I put some rocks around shrubs so he would not mow the shrubs.  Lawn mower lost the fight,  shaft is bent.  anyone ever bend a lawn mower shaft right?  SC

Been there, done that!  The trouble with most push mowers today (it is a push mower isn't it?) is that they weren't meant to last more than a couple of years.  I had a gas tank crack on one the other day and ending buying a new mower.  I bid on several used tanks on eBay . . . but they all went for over $15 plus shipping (another $7 - $12).  I could buy a new tank for $45 and wait several days to get it . . . or just buy a brand new mower with a 2 year warranty for $110.  I bought the new mower.

You could probably take the engine apart and the get a machine shop to straighten the end of the shaft if it's not too bad . . . but, by the time you get through, you might as well buy a new one.  If you try to straighten it with the engine still assembled, you'll probably ruin the engine case.

If it's a Briggs and Sratton engine that has the carb mounted on top of the tank, maybe we could take our two broken mowers and make a good one.   8)

Good luck with this one.  I bent one a couple of years ago, and the general attitude at most places ( no doubt due to the tendency to sue ) is that they won't straighten bent cranks anymore b/c of the possiblity of the metal fatiguing and cracking, creating the deadly projectile scenario. .....
I bent mine back myself. :D

Heres one for you. About 15 years ago my good friend and I went Sears and bought 2 new mowers that were on sale. These mowers looked way to expensive to be on sale for the price they were asking. We kept our traps shut, paid up and left in a hurry. I got home and oil and gas her up and ripped off across the lawn. First thing I ran into was a cast iron water faucet bury'd in the ground I didn't know was there. In 10min. I managed to make a horse shoe out of the blade, bend the crankshaft and break a chunk out of the alumn. housing on the underside Oh boy !
Now get this, about 30min later my Buddy called me and informed me that Sears had called him and wanted their mowers back and that they had giving us the wrong mowers. I told him what had happened . After he stopped laughing he told me to load it up and he would come by and pick me up and we would go back to Sears to get the right mowers. Needless to say I was more than a little worried about this. After we got to Sears I just couldn't not to tell the salesman what had happened. He said that he didn't care and that he was going to have to pay for the difference in price if he didn't get these mowers back. He help load us up and we hauled ass. I never heard another thing about it.  Whew!!!!
     True Story.

Man, I am Mad.. life is short. dont be mad .   Ate like a American at the mexican resaurant today.   Checked out Wally world.  . wally had a $100 return i liked.  went to my pawn shop  had a nice better model for $75.  Being SC,   I roll with a big bankroll.... Alas.... today I'm short.  So I went Home, .. Called out the Motor killer....Drain the oil Punk....Drain the gas Punk.  Get the the Sledge Hammer.. Punk ,,,Straithen out that crankshaft Punk..  Wack wack repeat..
The engine turned,  refilled with oil and gas, adn wonders of wonders.   Its alive and vibrating,  It is working, although it gets airborne when the rpms get high.  Maybe it will last the summer.   how Cool is that?   SC

I'm sure that I can Find a 1/2 dead engine to put your carb and stuff on if you don't survive the summer or you get too airborn to be safe for #2 son.
Or maybe that is what your planning, eye for an eye stuff....Hummm.

I have a great craftsman self propelled push mower behind my house that runs fine but 3 weeks ago while i was mowing, the area around where one of the engine mounting bolts is just cracked through. So the thing runs great but it would cost me more to fix it ( unless i can find some one to weld it back ) so i just bought a new one cheep. So if any one can use it i will work out a deal with them. Oh it may need a cleaning....... :D
