Banging noise when turning right

« on: May 16, 2009, 12:03:05 AM »
Now that Rick has the bus steering  like a new ride I want to ask about a noise that only happens when turning.

Ok when I turn the bus to the right and you are pressing the gas there is a banging noise that happens on the passenger side near the back. If you let off the gas while turning it goes away. Also, the faster you are going in the turn the faster the banging is.

Put the rear on jack stands and look for play or slop in the rear wheel bearings and CV Joints.  I had bad CV joint boots (really more like NO boots   ) a few year back.  From time to time I would get a hammering noise from the back.  It would usually start in a turn and wouldn't stop until I slowed down or stopped.  It turned out to be the axle sliding back and forth in the CV joints and hammering  the stub axle and flange in tranny.  I replaced the boots and worn joints and haven't heard it since.

Scott that sounds kinda like an axle,  but that souldn't happen only when you turn.  I would look into something rubbing in the back,  was this happening before the steering?

Ruttco, Like Zen said,  I would put my bet on a CV joint.  You have 4 of those little dumplings to deal with .  If you are going be driving a lot ,  I would let Rick pack or replace all 4 of them and be done with it. If you "pop" a CV joint
you will be dead in the water or middle of the road and those dang vans ain't easy to push around.

CV joint, i'll say too.  sometimes, when the load shifts, and the van leans, the axle angle is gonna change, then the ball bearings pop out of their wear groove, causing said noise, if it's bangin that loud, you might actually need to replace one, but like david said, repack them all regardless while you are in there.

That noise was there before the steering was fixed. The CV boot on the back passenger side is off. I guess this will be the next project after Memorial day weekend.

O.K., but be warned... like David said, if it's a cv joint, and it's making that much racket, if it locks up, you're screwed...if it breaks, you're screwed.  You have been warned.... of course, there's lots of tow services in the area....

Well crap. We are going camping this weekend down in Lafayette, GA. I will just try to only make left hand turns. Luckily a good friend of mine has a roll back in his driveway. Rick, you might be seeing her back again soon.

Thanks Travis. Can I just do the side that is making the noise or is it best to do both sides at once?

I think I would go ahead and do all 4 joints.  Clean, repack/replace plus necc. boots and be done with it.  But it is your coal truck do what you want to

I guess I will just need to let Travis take a look at it and see what parts I will need to order. 4 CV boots are cheap. 4 CV boots and joints = not cheap.

If the noise is only on one side i would replace boots and repace on one side and pull the other side to see if one or both off the joints are bad and go from there
