Hey People,  I will have in my grubby hands next week a tool for replacing upper/ lower ball joints on Type 1 Std Beetles.  Nice thing about this tool is that you can do the job without removing the trailing arms. You do it on the car. I used one of these tools for years at my shop. It takes about 1/2 the time and less effort. Let me know if can help you out.

Got one for bus ball joints?    I've got 4 brand new ones sitting in a box . . . all I need is some way to magically remove the old ones and press these in . . .

Now Zen, Surely you jest. You of all people know that Type 2s NEVER need ball joints even with 1/2 inch of slop  unless you know someone with a 50 ton press and has lots of room to run when things start to happen.

Up Date.  I now have the  "Porta-Tool" ball joint tool in hand. I sold all this kind of stuff years ago and now I`m buying it all back. What kind of deal is this ? :-k

I thought busses came with 1/2 inch of slop from the factory! Always figured it was to keep the driver from getting overconfident and overdriving the vehicle! I don't worry until it's a 1/2 turn of the steering wheel before something happens.

This reminds me of a rant, but instead of jacking this thread, I'll put it somewhere else!

:? There were a bunch of mushrooms growing in my back yard when I got back from vacation.  I've gotten rid of them.  Things will be back to normal soon. :bounce:

Ah yes, Mr Johnston....a worthy adversary.  I too have a Made in Germany "Port-a-Tool" type Ball joint tool, like the one we had at Lockhart's...the primary difference being that the threads are actually usable on this one and I was fortunate enough to find one with ALL of the install/removal pieces... No used sockets here...Quite a handy tool, actually.
P.S.  Hey, everybody....I think David really does have the press attatchments to do the bus ball joints (He 's just a little shy and doesn't want to boast.)  Bus owners longing for the truth in this matter have never been heard from again.  I think he shoots them on sight, or at least shoots in their direction as soon as he hears the sound of an exhaust leak passing between those infernal Copper gaskets and the heater box down pipes while the owner is revving the engine to keep it from stalling at the stop sign down the street.
True story...O.K., not really...but entirely possible.
P.S.S.  I think he said that he's going to start fixing Vanagon coolant leaks out of his home as soon as he gets the new garage done, too.
Heh Heh Heh.....
