Ball joint replacement on a Supersonic beetle

Question,  why does the super beetle have that
heavy steel 90 degree angle piece.  Is a place to jack the car up?   Seems like its added weight.  What is its purpose?

honestly, wasn't ringing any bells, so i broke out the factory manual, and don't see what you are talking about.  everything i remember and see, the sway bar goes through a bushing located in the control arm, an is capped off with a washer and locking nut.  Picture?

Yes   we are zeroing in.   the sway bar goes through the control arm  but on stupie there is a 90 degree metal angle  instead of a lock washer.  Its like 3 inches square.    Maybe the later supers had a less robust design or maybe vw had some left over steel  when the made the 71's.
