Update.   I disconnected the swing arm that goes to the front wheel and undid the  Sway bar.   the ball joint is connected to both pieces at this time  and is still under the car

The sway bar goes through  the swing arm and there is a piece of  heavy steel  90 degree angle with a cotter pin

I can't get the sway bar to disconnect from the swing  arm.   Does that 90 degree angle screw off the sway bar?   OR does it pop off once the cotter pin is pulled?.   SC

It pushes off after the nut is removed. Drop the sway down at the front ( 2 bolt) clamp.

Yes  remarkably..  I'm alive.       Since I have never done  suspension work on a Super beetle.   With all the parts mostly off.  you can see why they have shimmies.  Pretty simple design.    or is it a crummy design,  I never can tell.  The sway bar doubles as a hold the front end together bar.   SC

by the was....Still dont have the nut that holds the sway bar to the swing arm off yet.   I am thinking of getting a small puller from autozone.  maybe it can pop the ball joint off while its still under the car.

Looking back the pictures you posted, it looks like the ball joint is just bolted to the bottom of the stut assembly.  Is that right?  I've never worked on an early Super.  Later Supers had the ball joint pressed into the end of the control arm.  The later control arms are pretty flimsy too, just a couple of pieces of stamped steel spot welded together . . . a real pain the rear to press the ball joints out without damaging the arm.  It looks like with your set-up, all you have to do is pop the control arm off the shaft of the ball joint and unbolt the joint.  Is that right?  If so, go to AutoZone and borrow the biggest tie-rod puller they have.  Slide it over the end of the control arm and tighten the bolt and it will pop apart . . . no hammer, pickle fork, broken bones, etc. are necessary.  Unbolt the ball joint and bolt a new one on and put it back together.  If you are going to take it all the way apart to replace the ball joint, you might as well replace all the bushings, the struts and strut mounts and bearings while you're in there.  It will save you from having to take it apart twice.  But again, DON'T touch the big nut on the top of the strut unless someone that REALLY KNOWS what they are doing is with you and you have the spring compressed . . . and even then, keep yourself and everyone else out of the line of fire.

I try real hard  to use the right tools,  tried an open end wrench. slips

try a box wrench.. slip   try an socket wrench  slip.  Tried a vice grip.  Success!

Zen,  looks like I need to press this ball joint off.  my trusty hammer  can't do it.  Believe me l  I beat the heck out of it.  That swing arm is a big hunk of German Steel,  It say "Krupp" on the side.     SC

Best thing to use on that would probably be one of the "pickle fork" type seperators, you drive them in like a wedge between the joint and the control arm. loosen the nut most of the way, just leaving a few turns on till it breaks loose.. that will keep the flying parts down to a minimum.

I find that vice grips are probably in the top 10 of the 20th centuries' best creations, I have like 2 of the giant ones.  They are great for just about any thing, (even a hammer).
Seriously though, I have a pickle fork if you are interested.  They can really help.

If you can get a tie-rod puller like the one below to work, you won't have to use a hammer.  Of course if you like pain, grab a pickle fork and a 3 pounder and have at it . . .

I actually went and bought the proper tubing wrench and open end wrench I needed to change the fuel filter in my S-10.  After I got through rounding the nut on the fuel line and figured out that if you put the open end wrench on the big nut, it was sitting against the carb so you couldn't turn it, I broke out a medium size pair of curved jaw vice grips.  With a few twist of the knob, it fits both nuts and I can change the filter in under 5 minutes.  Good thing, since I have to change it after every couple of tanks of gas.  Vice grips, adjustable wrenches, big hammers and duct tape . . . don't leave home without them.

Yea!   I spent the day showing off my trophy swing arm vw thing .  After bragging about what I great and attractive VW repair man I is,   went to Maxi and  said "Hey! can you press this bal joint off?""
They said .  " Dude,  you don need no stinking presses,  They had a shiny silver hammer and whacked the side of the swing arm a few times and the ball joint boinged out like butter.   Evidently the ball joint shaft is
tape wormed or maybe they said tapered,   I just finished  putting all back together/   Yea!   SC
