Axle boot replacement

« on: December 25, 2001, 08:54:38 PM »
I finally got around to working on replacing the axle boots on Oscar.  I removed, cleaned and repacked the CV joints on the right axle...and still have got to do the left axle.  Well, Christmas kept me from doing the other one today...there's always tomorrow.  Heck, I bought these boots, CV joint grease and grease gun back in July.  Things get done eventually.

If anyone wants to see how to remove and replace CV boots (the one-piece kind) call me tomorrow and see if I am going to work on the other axle.  I just might! :sarcasm:

 I don't feel so bad about mine now . . . I bought my boots and grease a few days before we went to Florida Bug Jam.  I MUST get mine done soon though.  Three of the boots are gone!

I do have one question Travis . . . did the ones on Oscar use an 8mm 12 point star bit like on a bug, or were they a regular allen bit?  The ones on mine look like an allen.  I'm just wondering if someone has changed these out or if they were originally allen head bolts.

Well, the ones I took out were 6mm (I could have sworn it was a 6mm) allen head.  I tried my 12-pt. and it was too big.  I bought the allen head to take the ones off of Sweetpea a whle back, but bought a 12-pt. when I replaced the bolts (brand spankin' new) on Sweetpea.  I should have replaced the bolts on Oscar...I just wasn't thinking. :withstupid:

I think mine are 6mm allen head bolts . . . at least, that's what they look like.  I haven't tried to remove them yet.

I was just a little worried that someone might have changed them and put the wrong hardness bolt back in.  But, if both Sweetpea and Oscar had 6mm allen bolts, I'm not going to worry too much.

I don't remember which mine has, but I have the star bit, if you (or anyone) needs it!

On a related topic, I had to replace the swing-axle boot on the Vee, and do you use any sort of glue or sealant on the ends where they join together?  It's leaking at the seam on the small end.

A friend of mine replaced the boots on his swing axle bug and said he didn't use any sealer, but they leaked . . . then someone told him they were installed wrong was the reason.

I would have assumed that the seam goes up, and that's the way I see most of them installed, but he says the seam should be pointing towards the back of the car.  If it's up, it won't let the boot flex properly as the swing axle moves up and down and that's usually what causes them to leak.

Just remember though, I haven't done this.  I don't know if the above is true or not, but it makes sense.  I'd probably use a little silicone too, seems like it couldn't hurt.  I need to replace the swing axle boots on my 63 bug someday . . . so if you figure out how to get them to seal, please let me know!

I think the axles I've done were 8mm and I've seen both the 12 point bolts along with the regular allen head bolts. We put new boots on Russels bus and so far, they are doing fine.
