Autostick 12mm vacuum lines?

« on: October 07, 2009, 09:57:58 PM »
Anyone know anywhere locally that might sell some kind of hose that would work for this application?

I desperately need the line from the clutch servo to the control valve. I'd like to replace the one from the CV to the carb while I'm at it.

It's supposed to be 12mmID wire reinforced vacuum line.

Thanks,
Dave

If I posted this on the VWAR, I'd be some what crucified.
I have reinforced transmission hose on mine, it does flex- but doesn't collapse.  Has worked for the past 2+ years!
IF you want to meet up, you can look at my Auto Stick and I can point out all the things that I learned.

I am interested in seeing your AS set up in that I am wanting to possibly set up a ghia that I am going to buy as an Automatic stick shift.
I now have all the stuff neccesary.

Call me this week end and I'll meet you in Ringgold or some where close.

I've had bronkitus all week and I am just getting over it, but should be ok for the weekend.

I may even have some of that transmission line in the workshop.
I am just happy to have an AS buddy in the club.

ASBug,

I hope you feel better soon. My son had bronchitis last week. Didn't slow him down much but he sounded rotten.

The folks a VWAR have been real helpful. With their help I ordered a hose from the local Mercedes dealer that is supposed to be as close to OEM as can be found.

Thanks for your offer of hose. I may still take you up on it as I didn't order enough to do all the lines, just the one that's cracked (servo to CV). I should have enough left over to do the CV to carb as well.

I'd love to hook up if I get my Ghia running. The hose should be in on Saturday and in the car by Saturday night. I don't 100% know that the hose is the cause of my sudden shifting woes but it seems the most likely candidate.

I've got a lot to learn about my strange little car and I'd love to pick your brain. If not this weekend then maybe at the next meeting or Octoberfest activities.

This is not my 1st aircooled VW but it's my first Autostick. I'm digging it - lots of fun to drive.

Autosticks are a blast to drive . . . but make sure you don't, out of habbit, try to step on the clutch pedal when you go to shift!  Been there, done that.  My face got up close and personal with the windshield before I figured out what happened!

Zen is right about the shifting, although it is usually backwards for me.
After driving the ASBug for a week or so everyday, I'll get into my Toyota Passeo and immediately try to slam it into gear with out using the clutch.
It always lets me know I have made a mistake.

That's been the trick for me. I keep wanting to rest my hand on the shift knob.

It all depends on how you adjust the shifter.
I have mine adjusted so that you actually have to push it, so I can rest my hand on mine.

It is a common complaint that is easily remedied.

First this is my first post and I am glad I found you. :D

I no this is an old topic but wanted to no how you guys drive your AS. I was given an auto stick at the age of 15. I held on to it through high school, college, and many years beyond until I sold it in 2001. I recently got another one and took it to the shop to be serviced. The service guy told me I was driving the vehicle wrong. He told me that I must always drive the vehicle by starting in Low gear 1st, then 1st gear then 2nd. When I got my first auto back in the late 80"s the VW dealership I bought it from told me to start in 1st gear then at about 20 miles or so hit 2nd and to only use the Low gear when in need of climbing tough hills.

It has been some years since I had a AS VW but I had driven my AS in 1st and 2nd gears only for many, many. many years with out a problem. I only used low if I needed to go up a steep hill which is rare in the area of GA that I live in so I just wanted to no what is the correct way to drive them.

Thanks

Straight from the original sales literature.... low was for the take-offs needing more power/ torque, hills, etc.  according to the brochure i read ( a 1969 sales flyer) vw claimed that 1st and 2nd were the only gears you would need for the majority of around town driving.  But i just fix them, i don't own one.... how 'bout you KC?  any input?

From what I've read a lot of AS owners like to use all 3 forward gears cuz it's fun. Not at all necessary. I generally use 1st and 2nd unless I'm starting from a stop up a steep hill or I want a little faster take off. I found an original owner's manual on the web somewhere and this is how it's supposed to be driven.

I was working for the dealer when the A.S came out  in '68. It seemed that a lot of people were burning up torque con. and melting the seals from overheating the ATF  trying to climb the hills and mountains around here. We then got a  factory shop bull. to  recommend  folks to use all 3 gears even on flat ground.  That corrected the problem for the most part. When VW started using the 57 hp 1600cc signal port engines in cars in '70 and later the 60 HP '71 Duel port engine, the extra HP helped but factory still recommend to use all 3 gears. You have 2 heat sensors that will bring on the ATF light on your speedo if it gets to hot

Wow, Thanks RetbugTech. I'm kinda new to the Autostick but I thought I had that part figured out.

from now on I'll lean on the "L" a little more

Well, to be honest I've been driving around with a leaking servo bladder since I bought the car (replaced it this evening) so I've been shifting as little as possible to avoid stressing the darn thing.

Thanks for the info'. I stand corrected.

With 15K miles on the odo since I got it on the road, I feel that I can answer this question:  I now use 1-2 about 60% of the time.  If I am in no big hurry, I'll just leave it in 2. (This is with a 95K mile OEM set up.)  I have used L approx. 2 times in 2.3 years.  once for fun, once for Fort Mountian GA.  This was because of a Tractor trailer that was going about 5 mph up the mountian.
It is your sleigh, do as you wish - but I really don't use L because it winds out at 10 - 12 mph.
I would be interested to drive another AStick so that I can see how the shift pattern is in relation to mine.

Good luck - KC.

Yep, Its your Coal Truck drive it the way you want to. I was just passing along  what the factory said to do to make them last longer.
