I have an 87 vanagon weekender and want to change its transmission and driveaxle (it's broken). What other vanagon years trans would be compatible with this one (housing and everything) so I can search for one of those if I don't find the specific for this year?

Good question. Unfortunately, only one of us owns a Vanagon, and his is a stick. I do have a 76 Automatic, however, and I'm pretty sure it's transaxle fits any air-cooled Vanagon. Maybe that info will help in some way. Good luck!
