Auto Stick Starter

« on: April 05, 2015, 07:40:49 PM »
Finally put a new starter in the bus. Went with the Auto Stick upgrade from O'Reilly's Auto Parts for about $40.00. Its rebuilt of course. They ground most of the markings off of it, but it does say "Made in Germany" on it still so I have high hopes. The bus starts up better than ever, but it sounds a bit different. Maybe I am just used to slow, lumbering, and dying starter that I took off. Has anyone else every made switch? Should it/does it sound different?

I've had an autostick Beetle (still do, in fact) but I've never swapped from one type starter to the other on the same vehicle.  I never noticed an "unusual" sound from the starter.  But, on the autostick starter, the nose of the armature is supported by a ball bearing rather than a (usually worn out) bronze bushing.  I'm sure if you were to swap from one to the other on the same vehicle, it won't "sound" the same after the swap.

I am pretty sure I replaced the one on Trixie. I took my scooter to a rally at Deal's Gap and had starter trouble. I rode into Maryville and snagged an autostick starter but the problem didn't reoccur, so I didn't replace it. I think I finally put it on, but I am no 100% certain. Now I'll have to look!

If I did, there was no noise difference.
