ASBug is doing the jitterbug....

« on: February 10, 2009, 10:31:43 PM »
OK, when I hit the brakes, I am getting this vibration / rattle from the front end.
History:  10 mos old steering dampener, 10 mos old brake components, all except the drums.

It started about a week ago.  It IS getting progressively worse.  I think that it is the drag links / steering box ends.  I haven't had the time to tear into it.  Is there anyone who could look at this front end over the weekend and let me know if I can endure it, or if I should pull and rebuild the frontend in part or in whole?

Any one have a dropped spindle front end laying around?

I also would be interested in any opinions as what to check.  ihave no time to fix it now, and depending on the diagnosis, I might be needing someone to repair it for me.  So, any front end specialists out there?
Thanks,
KC :(

What your describing may or may not be a problem in your frontend.  I assume your car is a balljoint car?

True.   I don't think a damper would cause a brake shudder. If the car drives OK without the shudder and only when you put the brakes on ,I think I would be looking for loose wheel brg's ,  warp in the drums,  hot/hard spots in the drum's.  I forget, is your car a Super -B or Standard ?   If you have a Super-B, I would check everything that moves on that front end starting with the the U joints on the steering shaft and go from there. The least little thing can make a Super shudder even tire pressures. Sad but true. :(

As David stated it's probably a brake problem or wheel bearing. Sadly just because the drums are new doesn't mean they are good.  I had a "new drum on my 67 that was out of round right out of the box!

It's a standard.  I told him if it only does it when he applied the brakes, he should back off on the front adjusters a click or twelve.  He looked at me like I had two heads and asked if knew anyone who knew anything about Volkswagens.   :?
