ANY BODY KNOW A GOOD ELECTRICAL GUY?

« on: August 22, 2005, 10:21:08 PM »
Just bought a 67 bug and cant get the right stop light to work. I 've checked the obvioud stuff, bulb, broken wires,etc.. I have a diagram but I might as well let a monkey read it. Is there anyone in Chattanooga who can fix this pretty cheap? On the diagram it shows a brake light switch I can't find it could it be the problem or would both lights not work? Thanks in advance for any help.

The brake light switch(s) is/are on the master cylinder.  The original 67 master cylinder is (I'm pretty sure) a one year only part, but it may have been changed over to a later part.  Either way, it has two switches (one for the front brake circuit, one for the back), and either one can send power to the brake lights.  One wire goes from the front to the back, then spilts at a connector to supply both lights.  If one bulb is working, the problem is in the wiring in the back end of the car.  I "think" the wiring connectors are behind the tar board insulation in the engine compartment.

I've found that 90% of the electrical problems on old VWs are bad connections and 90% of those are bad grounds.  Just because a wire is plugged onto a terminal and the other end is fastened into the body with a screw doesn't mean there is still an electrical connection.  38 years of moisture in the air can cause enough corrosion and rust to make what appear to be electrical connnections actually turn out to be breaks in the circuit.

What Zen said...

Check the bulb, and if it works, wire brush all possible points of contact between there and ground, including ground. Half the time its a bad connection in the socket itself or not enough spring tension holding the bulb in, the other half its the ground wire (if any).

Good luck and keep us posted!

Once you have good clean points of contact, coat them with dielectric grease.  It'll seal out the moisture and help prevent future corrosion.

The bulb works as a tailight it just doesn't brighten up when I hit the brakes. I know it's something really simple I just can't find it. Oh well the search goes on. Thanks for the tips.

culprit found! Damage to wiring from a squirrel who had been using the engine bay to store acorns. I fixed it but a bet the squirrel will be missing his food.lol.

I don't know what it is about air-cooled VWs . . . but if you let them sit idle for any length of time all kinds of critters move it and make themselves at home!  Squirrles, mice, wasp, ants, birds . . . they all love VWs too!  8)

Just wandering if anyone knows what gauge wire works best for a super 12volt system??? If anyone knows please let me know. I found out that I will need to rewire my bug and don't want to pay that much money for a wiring loom. I also want to add more inlin fuses where there aren't that many now..
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Buying a new wiring harness to start with is the cheap way out.  I've know several people, some of them fairly good electricians, who tried completely rewiring their car from scratch.  ALL of them ended up buying a wiring harness in the end.

By the time you buy enough different colored wires to keep everything straight, the harness will be cheaper anyway.  If you try to do it with a limited number of colors . . . good luck.  You'll want to buy lots of asprin before you start.  And a couple of fire extiguishers.  And it wouldn't hurt to have a few thousand fuses, a few regulators and stack of generators on hand as well.  With a correct wiring harness and a good color-coded wiring diagram on the other hand, the main thing you'll need is time.
