An oddity and something I should know...

« on: February 22, 2012, 08:13:04 PM »
So, i have a 72 super, and there a couple of things I can't figure out. First of all, there is a latch in the glove box. Is it meant to operate the trunk? If it is, I can't figure out how its supposed to be connected, as there is a wire ran down to the outer latch. When I pull it, something wants to move in the latch workings, but I can't figure out whats supposed to move. Secondly, there is a toggle switch that someone along the way has installed above where the radio is supposed to be. It has a couple of wires connected to it, but it doesnt seem to operate anything. Im guessing it used to be a part of some long ago sound system. Any tips, hints, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

the lever on the left side of the glove box is for releasing the hood. You pull it back toward you and a steel wire in a flex housing that run down the right cowl then crosses over to the lower latch receiver. the upper latch(like a stob)fit into the receiver. When you pull the cable it uncovers a little slide in the receiver that allows the hood to pop up.  Its hard to explain how to adjust not being there. I'm taking that all the parts are present and connected.  I have no clue what the toggle switch does.

Okay, I think I understand. So, the hood should not open with the external button until the hood latch is pulled from the glove box to release it, right?

correct.  If you can open the lid without pushing the button on the handle and not pulling the release in the glove box, you have a problem. Dud.   The hood could fly up.    OH !! never, never slam the hood shut. It bends things.

Yes, they SHOULDN'T OPEN when you just push the button, but it's a fairly common occurrence for them to do just that....

Funny story time....

An individual I know "back in the day" used to wander up and down the neighborhood streets near his home in California, pushing buttons and seeing which ones would open.... when he found one that would, he would remove the spare tire, replace it with his old worn out, bald tire, close the trunk, and walk back home and install his newly acquired tire and rim on his beetle.  Using this sure method, he never had to buy tires for his beetle....

True story... and more of you know this shady character than you realize....  ;)

I thought 412s were like Dashers . . . they did a pretty good job of disabling themselves.   ;D
