What's wrong with your alternator?

I would like to get it possibly wound up to produce more amps to keep from killing my battery all the time.

I called Martin's Speedometer in Ft. Oglethorpe, he told me if I took it out and brought it in, he'd look at it for me.

Hey Herb,
What was the name of the alternator/generator place downtown?  Can't they do it?  I've used them, but can't remember their name... :?

AABCO at the corner of E. 14th ST and Cemetary Ave. John Thatcher is the man who owns it. Russ, I think you have been to him before.

Don't tell me you are using more AMPS than your alternator is putting because of certain electronic devices you are running. Is this the case???

I'm pretty sure it's my cigarette lighter.

Anyways I called Martin's Speedometer in Ft. Oglethorpe, he said to just pull it off the car and take it in and he'd take a look at it. The alternator doesn't look too hard to take out, considering it's right on top when you open the hood. I think I can probably take it out myself.

Why would you want to take an alternator to a speedometer shop instead of an alternator shop?

Cig. lighter? You must smoke alot.  What is the clue that told you that it was the lighter ?  Have you checked the output on the alt. while it was on the car while your acces. were on and off ? Are you running a mega watt sound system ?  Have you check the car for a battery drain with everything off ?  You can do this by taking the ground cable off the battery and put VTM between the neg. post and the ground cable. If you get a reading, start pulling fuses until the reading goes away. Then see what the fuse controls. A common problem sometimes was the glove box light stays on, Trunk light,if you have one, belive it or not the interior light receptical and that light didn't even have to be on. Go figure.
After all that said and done, Is you alt. light glowing at you ? Does your alt . light bulb come on when you just turn the switch on ? Some Jettas and Rabbits/Golf alt. lights are part of the charging ciruit and if they burn out, the alt. will not charge and you won't have clue as to what happened without that light burning.

Before some of you" electronic hot shots" tell me I'm full of donkey dung about the alt. dash light thing, I cant' recall how many Jetta/Rabbits alt. I have fixed by replacing the burned out bulb, but I do remember that it was a lot easer to remove the alt. than to remove the dash panel, taking it apart for one stinking bulb. One of VWs better ideas.

It's not the cigarette lighter, I was just joking.

What happens is when I start the car, the battery light comes on and doesn't go out until I tap the accelerator and start driving. Then the whine starts coming through my speakers. That makes me sound like my battery is going sour again due to the alternator not recharging it properly. That's why I was wanting to get it rebuilt, and wound up to produce more power to keep the battery charged.

Russ , Most diesels alt. do this little trick on you . Pat the pedal and the light goes out. The whining I'm not sure about unless you noise suppressor cond. has gone south. Get someone to put a meter on that critter and see what your alt. is doing before you start slinging parts.
