almost movin'

« on: April 19, 2010, 10:48:41 PM »
getting close to getting my van moving again. picked up a long block this weekend, and i have stripped everything i need off my old engine.  im still missing a few parts i need. fuel pump, and a few gaskets.  havnt decided on electronic ignition yet, probly just leave it be for a while.  here are a few questions i have. i have the boots to rebuild my cv's, first off i have a set i pulled out of a 72, and i need to know they  are the same as the ones in my 73bus?  second i donot have grease to pack them with, what kinda would u recomend?  crossing my fingers on the brakes worked great when parked last year... new tires are on the list too, 2 passenger tires on front, 2 old d rated on the back with lots of cracking on the outsides, hold air though. anythoughts on keeping one of the passengers as my spare?

on another note i could use some tin pieces, the ones under the cylinders, and the one under the pulley. if anyone has some good used ones let me know.

i do have a question. my origianl engine had the bus generator and im going to an alternator, will all my tin work right? seems like i read the bus generator had special tin due to it being a bit larger.

Yep, the bus generator is longer than a standard generator and has to have special tin to set it deeper in the fan housing . . . otherwise the pully won't line up and you will throw the belt off every time you turn around.  Ask me how I know this!!!!

If it was me, I'd just stick with the bus generator.  It puts out a little more juice than a bug generator.  Not as much as an alternator, especially at low speeds, but unless you are running a LOT of electrical stuff, it puts out pently of juice.  The new "one wire" alternators with built in regulators are great, but if the regulator goes bad you gott'a replace the whole thing.  About the only thing that ever goes wrong with a generator is the brushes (cheap and fairly easy to change) and the regulator (about $35 bucks, external and easy to change).  As an added bonus, if your belt breaks in the middle of nowhere, you can wire a generator to run like a motor and keep your engine cool for a short time (how long depends on your battery) . . . hopefully long enough to get to a parts store, cell phone service, or whatever.  I don't really have anything "against" alternators . . . I just prefer generators.

I'm with Zen on the gen. verses alt.   A added perk is the cooling fan is less likely to shake apart.  Seems that the "rolling mass of the much heaver gen lessens the amount of vibrations either in the engine or a common out of balance fan situation . You have to remember that the fan is turning about 1 and a half times more RPM'S than the crankshaft .

good points, ill have to rethink my plans, im going to put in a sound system, but if i can do it im going to run it all of a 2nd battery which will be charged via 110 when im parked, but id be nice to be able to charge  off the alt too.  i havnt got into mapping the wiring yet  :o thats down the road when its movin again. mechanics before all else.

still working on this beast, and have encountered another issue. after pulling the crankshaft pulley to install the tin underneath it i went to replace to pulley and while tighting it up i notice it was starting to hit the engine tin, and was getting really close to the case. pictures below... i measured the pulley length where it goes toward the case, and it was about 5/8ths of an inch. im not sure if there are difrent lenths.

Thats strange. Do you have another pulley to compare to ?  Did this pulley come with the long block ?

This exact thing happened to me once before.  No idea why, but all i did was take the pulley back off, take the sheet metal to a grinder, put it all back together, no problems.  I don't know.   ???

Maybe the lips on the backsides of the pulleys are different????

well i have finally got the chance to pick up my old pulley, and yes there is a difference.
TDC's line up when compaired to the key slot. left is pulley that came with the new long block, right is pulley off my AE cases.

This is very important .   On the three notch pulley, the notch on the left by its self is "O" . the other notches are 7 1/2 degrees advanced and 10 degrees advanced.
I can't see the notch on the other pulley but if it has one rather big  mark on the outer edge (rim) ,that is "0" other than that they are interchangeable .

Update:

Finally was able to get my bus moved so i could get working on it.
its was about 9pm as the Blue elephant rolled off the trailer and into the garage. Shes been neglected and extra dirty.

rear end in the air and engine mounted to traney

engine tin/type1 adapter fiberglass and seal installed. still have to deal with the holes in the rear engine tin that was for the heater boxes, on the look out for a decent pair, or engine tin without holes.

got her outta the garage and gave her an over due bath, and to my surprise she was white and blue...

she also got some new shoes to replace the overly dryrotted Cooper Weather masters that were on the rear.

still have plenty to do, and she could use a good tune, by someone with more experience. timing good, valves  good, need to work with the carb a bit.
