Alabama bound and oil light comes on !!

« on: February 18, 2009, 11:50:19 PM »
Well guys on the afore mentioned move to Alabama i got about 2 miles from where Roadkill was to be parked and the oil light came on flickering. Well out on hwy 59 in the dark and the oil light comming on did not sit well with me. The funny thing about it was i checked everything before i left and it ran good on the way to the storage building in Trenton GA. I put all my furniture etc there and then about 2 miles from Ider Alabama the light started comming on. What should i look for ( besides no oil in it ) before i refill it and attemp the drive back here. I do not  want to destroy Bugnuts great engine work. ...... Rob

Well, Did you say it didn't have any oil ? Losing that much oil that quick, I would think it would be easy to find unless it was going out the tail pipes.

It did have oil in it when i left for there. But with my luck lately it probably was a false reading on the stick and there was very little and the rest went out the cheap leaky valve covers on it. I need a set of the original ones. I will fill it back up with oil and see if it will get back up here. Who knows i may just put it up for sale again and let the first $3000 cash take it.....  :)

Homer the Super Bus was headed down I-59 towards Birmingham Bug Blast several years ago when the oil light started flickering.  This was the engine I put it in a couple of weeks earlier at the Southeastern Bug Fair (that's a long story in its self).  Anyway, my problem was the oil plug had fallen out.  It wasn't leaking too bad running 60, but as soon as I slowed down, it dumped all my oil out on the road . . . well not all of it went on the road, about a quart of it ended up covering Anthony's 1998 Mexican Beetle.    I'm just glad the plug didn't bounce up and go through his windshield!

I also had an oil light come on and stay on going to Circle Yer Wagens one time.  That turned out to be due to a bad oil sending unit.

My friends oil light came on in the middle of nowhere and sent me into a Godfather calling panic attack. Turns out bad sending unit as well. The old oil light always makes my heart skip a beat or two.

Good to hear that i am not the only one who has had this oil light problem and loss of oil while going somewhere in a bug or bus. I will check the oil plug and then the sending unit to see if they are loose etc and replace them if bad before i leave there on my way back here. I might even make a sacrafice or 2 too the great vw god to cover my bases before i leave.

It's just hard to beat an oil pressure gauge, even if you have one on a tee at the motor. Atleast then if your oil were to come on you could just pull and check your oil level and if it's ok restart and see if you have any pressure. My oil light came on once because the wire for my oil sender melted to one my preheater pipes.

hey 67dub i would like to get the oil pressure etc gauge put in mine. I even have the dash pannels for all the gauges but do not have the money for the gauges. Maybe i can find a cheap set someone does not need any longer that works still. Hell i do not even care if they match but as long as they work.........
