Air cooled mechanic HELP!!

« on: December 03, 2005, 11:23:09 AM »
I need to find a good air cooled mechanic perferably closer to the Knoxville, TN area.  Someone who has done dune buggies and other mid engine stuff would be great.  I think I bent the shifter fork in my Beck 550 spyder.

Bent a shifter fork ?  What makes you think that ?   Give me some kind of clue to what happened. Those Beck Spyders are a nice ride. Wish I had one.

Out driving and the jamar shifter came loose. Had to force it to change gears.  Parked came back out and it was stuck between 2 gears. The mechanic that has it has little air cooled experiance and no jamar experience he thinks the fork is bent due to not being able to get the adjustment right on the shifter, that's why I'm looking for a new mechanic.

Hey Pork !   Are you hung up in 2nd gear ?  Easy fix if so.  Two ways you can correct.  Being mid engine, you can take the nose cone off the tranny and line up the 3 shift levers. If you are locked in 2nd gear ,you will find that the middle shift lever is pulled out and the other 2 are even with each other .  If you are locked in 1st gear the middle lever will be pushed in all the way. In either case ,line up all 3 levers. This should put you in neutral. Push the "hockey stick" out of the nose cone just far enough to "hang" it in the 3 levers and push the nose cone on carefully and bolt it down.
You can also do it this way. Remove your tranny fill bolt(17mm allen). Look in the hole and you will see the 1st/2nd gear shift sleeve. If you are locked in 2nd gear, you can take a short screw driver and shove the shift sleeve toward the rear of the car(mid engine) Locked in 1st, shove the sleeve toward the front of the car. You will feel it go into neutral.
If you are locked in any other gear, removing the nose cone would be about the only way to do the job.
Worse case is you could have broken a 1st/2nd gear shift fork depending on what year your tranny is. Some trannys had a brass shift fork that had a nasty habit of breaking . After trying the "in car" fix and it has a broken fork, it will hang again when you change gears. In that case you will have to take her apart. You can replace the brass fork with a steel one
I hope this will help. To bad you are not closer and I hope I didn't confuse you with all of this.
