air bubbles in fuel line - i need help

« on: August 18, 2002, 03:07:08 PM »
Hi everyone. I am a new user of these forums and in need of some help. I have a 73 super beetle and I keep getting air bubbles in my fuel line. It happens after the car has been running for about 10 minutes or so. I can see a lot of air coming through the fuel filter and the car idles rough. I have replaced all of the rubber sections of fuel line hoping that it would help but it didnt. Do you guys have any advice for me? I hope so because I'm about to go nuts! Thanks for any info you can give me and I look forward to talking to more of you soon.

Hi Cawasha,  I would recommend you first pull your oil dip stick out and smell of the oil on it. If there is a remote smell of gasoline, what ever you do, don't start your engine. If the smell is there, you have problems with your fuel pump. Drain the oil and replace your fuel pump because the diaphram has a hole in it and is allowing gas to go into the crankcase.

Are you in Chattanooga?  If so, we have our monthly meeting tomorrow nite (Monday) at Walley's Resturant in East Ridge, TN. We would love to have you come and visit.

Let us know about your fuel problems.

Hi vwherb. I am planning on coming to the meeting tomorrow night. I live right up the street from Wally's over by the Ramada Inn that burned. I have a new fuel pump but I am not sure if it's the right one or not. Also my new fuel pump has a hole drilled into the bottom part of the round section of the fuel pump. Should that be there? It is brand new but I was a little unsure about putting it on because of the hole. I have only had this car for about a month and a half and its my first bug so I am still in the first stages of learning about this thing. What I'm getting at is if I seam ignorant about vw's it's because I am. Thanks for any and all input you can give me.

Is it just air bubbles or is the fuel actually look like it's boiling?  Your engine may be running too hot and trying to vapor-lock.  The hole in the bottom part of the round section, I believe, is an air vent for the diaphragm.  It also lets you know when the diaphragm is broken by leaking out the hole.  Just bring the car and pump by the meeting, if you feel safe driving it, and we'll stare at it 'till we figure something out! ???

I wish I had seen this post before our meeting.  I understand that you got your problem fixed, but when you say that you can see air coming through the fuel filter, I am assuming that you have a clear plastic filter located between the fuel pump and the carb, correct?  If so, please read the following link . . . and take it to heart now . . . don't do like I did and wait until you look in the rear view and see flames.
