aggravation - interior light

This is driving me crazy! My '70 bug, "Buggy", won't decide if she wants her interior light to work or not. I had it "fixed by a friend of mine who said he replaced the wiring, and Buggy liked that for a while, but now she just won't make up her mind. I have her in the shop getting new floor pans, so I have plenty of time to solve this. I figured my new "family" could probably help me out with this better than anyone else. Thanks!

When you say "work or not" are you meaning that it sometimes don't work when a switch is turned on? Or does it not work when the door opens? Or does is spurratically go on and off while its supposed to be on?

If it's a problem with the light working sometimes and not others when the door opens, the most likely cause is the little switch in the door post.  Take it out and clean all of the corrosion off of it, cover all of the contact surfaces with a thin coat of dielectric grease.  Clean and grease the little spade connector on the wire too.  The corrosion that naturally builds up over time will prevent a good contact . . . the grease helps keep the moisture in the air off the metal and slows the formation of new corrosion.

Also, you might want to check out the wiring diagram to make sure your friend wired it up correctly.  You can find a colored wiring diagram at type2.com.  Look in the Library under Electrical--Primary.

Dittos to Zen.  Try wiggling the switch with the door open.  Also check the contacts on the switch in the light housing itself.  Some are not well-made, others are just old.  Most times, it's a bad ground or contact somewhere.

Thanks, you guys! Man, I have a lot to do now. I think that I will try the door post and go from there. My friend is a VW nut, and did wire it correctly, he used to work for VW back in the days, and knows these things inside out, so it was wired correctly. I have some time, since she is still in the shop.
THANKS, EVERYONE!!!!!!!!
