*DISCLAIMER*

This is in no way an endorsement of GEX rebuilt engines in general, or the one installed at ~93K in me Rivi.

However, these are the facts as they stand...

Have I covered the point (er mileage) spread yet?

Merry VWing, Mike

Well isn't that something !!   Goes to show you that even a blind pig can fine a good acorn .

Whoops! Im not refering to you .  Im refering to the GEX mechanics(?) who must have been sober and built your engine on some other day of the week other than a Monday morning. What do you think ?

I'm glad to hear the bus is still moving under its on power. :thumbs-up:   Did you get the electrical issues worked out from where the battery tipped over?

"Pig"...

Ouch! Hast I offended thee?

If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge...

Methinks one prefers to be the blind dog who finds a bone...

Indeed, still trudging along nicely (GEX).  The damage from my battery idiocy was repaired immediately.  Behold the the beauty of the new metal bracket firmly holding yon Underwhelming Yellow Optima Battery...

One can see some burnage on the orange flashlite- but the sucker still works, so it stays!  Hmmm... looks like I shoulda cleaned that fender.

Meanwhile, I've also been busy with this, Project "Make the Speakers Sound Bitchin" (and kill rust/ repair broken clips and moisture barrier):

and occasionally I do some arts & crafts...

since when I'm driving I can never see if those suckers are open or closed.

You might be saying to yourself, "Self, that boy sure does take a lot of pics"... No, I really am not in love with my camera; my buddy with a 74 Westy bribed me with a case of Rogue ales to document my shenanigans.

Cheers, Mike

Well !   Aren't we the clever one with your vent indicators.  On normal cars ,when you have your vents open, something flows out in your general direction and when they are closed the flow stops. But I said a normal machine. On a VW this flow phenomen can sometimes only be detected if you have a fan jet from a C-5A installed somewhere in the ducting. This installation is also great for clearing out your ducts of foreign objects like nuts and bolts, wine bottles, great flapping things and previous owners.
Your Buddy is correct about keeping a photo record of your escapades(?) with this Van for future sessions of comic relief when you are feeling depressed and want to trade for a Kia.

Kia?

Blasphemy!!

(as he looks pensively outside at his Honda Civic, and remembers swearing never to own any such kind of generic auto crapola, cuz nearly no maintenance and 33mpg is for wussies)...

I have the "ambulance" fans now- no luck on clearing wine bottles etc, just old crummy black foam which seems to fly out at a tornado rate of velocity only when the vents are aimed directly at my eyes, at night... blech.

By the by, that Dynamat soundproofing material into the doors makes a heckuva difference.  Nice reduction in road noise, definitely great speaker bass response.

Hey All,

As I near the fearsome mileage of 5000K- oops, I mean 6K!-

contact your bookie, adjust your pool/ spread;-)

-on the GEX, I'm having cold start, and warm start issues, which might (?) be related... so I consult thee for help please!

Generally, when the Beastie is cold, it takes 2 attempts- the first causes a fire up, and a quick die, the second always catches and then idles fine, and away we go.  No concerns about the starter, it sounds strong and smooth.

When warm, I can't get it to start and idle without having to give a few light taps on the gas, and then we're idling fine, right around 900rpm. If I don't, it starts, dies, starts, dies.

Just did a tune up- the plugs were all uniformly tan (so it looks like I've fixed the leanness it had) which was good news.  The lifters seem happy at 1.25 turns, with no clicking beyond the normal windup alarm-clock-in-overdrive aircooled VW sound.  Timing is set for +36deg at 3.5K rpms- that's just where it seems to sound and perform the best.

I've been adjusting things more and more by feel/ sound, since the normal specs seem to be a bit off for this engine... which could just mean it is slowly instead of quickly imploding, or that it is simply finicky.... dunno.  Regardless, I can't seem to eradicate this starting bit...

Any ideas?

Oh, any of you Cats or Kitties using synthetic oil?  Pros Cons in your opinion appreciated!

Cheers, FL Mike

Boy !!!!    Now you are having the normal things that happen to these wonderful injected  type-4 engines.  The first thing we use to check was the head sensor( right by #3 cly) .    These things like to corode on the threads and cause all matter of wierd things to happen or it is trying to crap out.  Same deal on ground connections, Cold start valve, Flow meter and this, and this, and that. I'm not saying that any of these are causing the problem, but thats where I would start. Its these little things that caused me to go bonkers and drive me to drink when you find out that the right front turn signal bulb was the problem the whole time. Scoff if you must, but I have seen crazier things than that happen.  You might wiggle one wire and cure everything on the whole damn vehicle including the brakes .

Thanks!

Altho...
Damn... I think I liked it better when the problems were esoteric and clearly pointed a finger at a component!

Here's a weird one for ya- well, weird to me... I've been running an aftermarket stereo for 6months with no problem.  Now, out of the blue, when I start the beastie, the sound skips like a cd when you hit bumps, except that this occurs with the tuner, with MP3 player, whatever the source is.  Turn the ignition to "accessory" and it sounds fine.  Start the bus and the sound starts cutting faster than Abramoff could plead guilty.  I checked the connections, tried different locations on the fuse block, moved the ground...

So, maybe a voltage drop- which must be indicative of a problem elsewhere... the vehicle has been sitting for a couple weeks, but still had plenty pf juice to start...?

It's always good to have an ear open for the engine, but I can't cruise without tunes!

Thanks, Mike

Hmmmm,  Maybe your sound system is trying to tell you somthing other than just playing Japanese folk songs like " Carry Me Back to Old Mount Fuji Where the Water Buffalo and Rice Paddy's Dwell"   :-({|=
How about checking the ground strap you should have ,between the tranny and the frame . It should be on the "nose cone" somewhere. Just a thought.
Be careful about playing "Rap " stuff. Its hard to distinguish that noise from a Gex about to give birth to great flapping things.
