ABS plastic panels

This guy on eBay and The Samba, werksberg, makes and sells replacement interior panels out of ABS plastic.

I just bought a set of kick panels for my bus from him. The front has a haircell finish, so they match the dash and other plastic surfaces in the bus really well. Best of all they fit perfectly and look great. And they're only $35, compared to $50 Bus Depot wants for their set of ABS panels. He ships fast too. I ordered on Thursday, he mailed them out Friday and they were here on Monday.

Here's a direct link to the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260296053221

And his eBay store, he sells panels for other VWs too: http://stores.ebay.com/werksberg

He will also sell directly via PayPal, send him a PM on The Samba: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=38954

Sometimes he includes goodies with his shipments too. I got a 1985 copy of VW Trends :D

By comparison, these are my original kick panels. Vinyl and pasteboard don't hold up well to 30 years of moisture and dirty shoes.

By the way, do you know what VW put behind the front kick panels? Styrofoam!

I gutted all the old styrofoam (it basically crumbed away when I touched it) and replaced it with two layers of Reflectix insulation. Good stuff, basically two sheets of bubble wrap with aluminum foil on each side. Helps with soundproofing, too.

All cleaned up, new kick panels installed. Also, I want to move my front speakers into the door panels. Can anyone cut a 6" hole?

You said it helped with soundproofing...what kind of sound were you getting?  I could possibly help ya with the cutting.  Is the surface flat?  Do you have enough depth for the speaker?  I have a set of what I call unishears that would aid in cutting out the hole.

It just helps eliminate some road noise. I have the same stuff in my front doors and they sound a lot more solid when you shut them, vs. having no insulation at all.

There is plenty of room in the bottom of the door for the speaker, I used to have them installed in there before. For some reason Richard moved them to the kick panels. But, my new kick panels are much thinner and I'm afraid the  weight of the magnets in the speakers might warp them, plus it will sound better to have the speakers opposing each other by mounting them in each door panel. The panels themselves are just masonite covered with vinyl, and they're flat, so it should be easy to cut. Are you coming to the cruise-in tomorrow?

Probably not.  Too cold for me.  When it comes to cold weather, I am an indoors type person.  I haven't worked on my project in about a month because of the cold.  Generally my mom in law keeps my son on Friday nights and it's about the only time that my wife and I get to actually take time to interact. (anyone with kids knows what I mean)

Russ,
I have a fly cutter for metal that I can let you borrow, it cuts a round hole and it is smother than a hole saw.

I found a place here in town that sells the .06" x 4' x 8' sheets of black plastic. One side is smooth and the other is textured. The company is Technology Sales Co. Inc. on Bonny Oaks and S Access Road. 629-1743. I wonder if there are templates available on the web for all the panels? I have most of the original ones that I can use.

Hey JR . You have to remember that Russ rides around in a Westy so he is use to freezing to death in the winter. Wait until he gets old enough and is taking blood thinners like me. Then he will know what cold really feels like. I take a few snorts of "Ole' Barley Corn" just to go out to get the paper in freezing weather.

Maybe the paper boy should throw a lil harder so you don't have to go as far.

I doubt there are any templates on the web, but I know where there's a green Westy we could borrow some out of . . .

How much is a 4 X 8 sheet of the plastic material?
