I am very excited about buying a 2000 or 2001 VW Beetle and have done my homework researching them. I heard they burn a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. Is this true? I would deal with it. Also, how long do the engines last before they need a rebuild? Do they hit 100k OK? 200k? I have never seen any statistics.

We usually have to add to our 2002 between oil changes but I don't think it's anywhere near a quart.  We have close to 40,000 miles on ours and have been very pleased with it.  We've heard that the 2.0 engine is the good one to have.
