Subaru sounds like a good idea. I'm sure someone has figured out what to do about adding a  water-cool system by now as many have been converted from air-cooled.  I have seen a few engine swaps with the Infamous Water-Boxer.  The Subaru is bulletproof and runs like a raped ape. Good Luck

A lot of people have converted to a cheaper type 1 engine. Creative Car Craft makes some fiberglass conversion pieces.

I've seen some type IV motors for sale before. They are expensive and thus have become more scarce because people don't like to pay for a rebuild. I was talking to Ed down at Ed's foreign parts down in Gadsden AL last week and he said he builds them. Not sure on his price, but I'd probably deal with him after talking to him about them. He said he uses a lot of the same suppliers as a large headed ego that builds them for ~$10k just to the south of us.

What are you trying to accomplish? Restoration? Bone stock? Just get it running? Some folks won't do anything other than stock, others want a modern reliability, and others want the cheapest thing to get it rolling.

***EDIT: I just saw you were in New Mexico, which probably wouldn't help you with Ed, but he would probably still ship

Lol you gotta be talking about Raby! ;) 10k sounds like a lot, and IS a lot, but there are 2 sides to that coin. I know someone here in Chattanooga that has that much tied up in a Scat 2.0...and still has a Scat 2.0..bone stock rebuild, poor quality control and all, it took 2 engines and months of down time to get those numbers, but he's there and I'm sure if he knew what was down the road for him he would have picked a Raby build instead.  I'm sure there is others that can build a solid type 4 but I wouldn't gamble my cash on it, Jake's engines are proven. I would just type 1 convert at this point unless your going for restoration, easiest install and drobe88 has one in the parts section of our classified for $650. Just get the conversion parts and slap it in, you can burn up several of those for the cost of one questionably built type 4. 8)

I was, but I didn't want to say the name because I've heard he has a google search set up to inform him when his name was mentioned. He then comes in an joins a forum to talk about how great he is. From what I've read, he just assembles motors; he is just really picky about the parts he uses and tests everything on his machines.

If it were me, I'd throw the type 1 in and buy the conversion tin.

I heard the same thing a number of years ago too, but just dont see it being true.
Plus if it was just a matter of using a few choice parts and bolting them together there would be a 100 different places building these engines, just like the type 1, the demand is there, but as it is there is virtually no one putting these engines together and I don't blame them, it's way to easy to burn em up, drop a valve or leave a vital part of the tin off and just have overheat problems over and over.  If they were all destined for a Beetle or Ghia they would probably live a much happier and longer life, but they all get shoved in the heaviest brick and way over worked.  They worked pretty well in the 914, but got the short end there with a head change that made them even worse about valve issues.  I bet a 914 with Bus heads on a 2.0 and a complete cooling system would be tough to beat, like a 1.7.  8)
