67 Bug Help please!

« on: August 28, 2006, 10:28:06 PM »
:( I couldn't find a face for cryin myself to death. My bug is wrecked! HELP! A mean ol pole reaced out in a parking lot and bit me from behind. Damage is a s follows. Bumper is totaled rear right fender is got a dent the size of my melon head and the rear apron is bowed a little. The only good news is I was smart enough to get a custom car policy and the company will cover all of it and will take into consideration rare 1 year only parts up to the max of $2500

I need an estimate for damages from someone that wil consider the price of original 67 apron,67 fender and original vw bumper. Any ideas? I will also need any clues as to anyone that might have a line up on these parts. Samba was a bust. guy wanted $900 for fenders. Any help would be greatly apreciated. I guess i'll be restoring earlier than I thought.

I could be wrong, but I believe the over-riders on the rear bumper are one year only . . . aren't they sloped a little different so the wider decklid will clear?  I've got a rear bumper off of a 67 . . . the blade is bent and pitted, but I think the over-riders are good.  I think I know where you can get a pretty decent 67 deck lid if you need it, but you might be looking for a while for the one year only apron.  It might be cheaper to have yours straighened out.

I know where there was a 67 sitting the weeds a couple of years ago, but I'm pretty sure the apron was trashed.  It was hit hard on one end or the other . . . and I'm pretty sure it was the rear.  I'll try to locate the guy's name and number and if he's still got it, I'll go take another look at it this weekend just to make sure.

I actually couldn't say anything that could be printed here for 30 minutes. Luckily my car has alot of 66 parts it's an early 67. so I won't need the overriders. The apron may be able to be straightened out the fender could be but would be better to replace. I found a whole car that is getting crushed that I may save for parts.

I'm still curious about your car having alot of '66 parts. I was working at the dealership when the '67 came out and I don't recall ever seeing a USA spec. '67 with leftover '66 parts. We looked real close at the first batch of '67s that came to the dealership I think in either Oct or Nov and thought how ugly the headlights looked.
What is the complete vin # under the back seat and the vin # on the medal tag behind the spare tire.
Scott , I'm not questioning you about you knowing what year car you have but only curious if you indeed have a Oddball and when exactly  it was born.  The vin #s will tell the tale. I love a mystery

for a 30 somethin I have a terrible memory I did all this already. All the research said mine was an early 67 I'll look again when I tear it apart. Ever notice I've got 67 fenders with 66 headlight buckets? no 67 over rider bars?haha. i gotta sit down with a fella tommorrow whos gonna help me do an estimate for repair. Now I know it wont take as much as I'm gettin to fix it specially since I'm gonna do alot of it my self. I dont think it takes a Genius to replace a bumper and fender. My insurance adjuster told me to be real carefull when doing the estimate as to not underbid myself on the parts.

So with all that said what is the going price for a 67 fender, apron ,or an original bumper in non rusty condition? what I mean to say at all these shows yall get out to what are they goin for? High price to low kinda values are what I need. The adjuster will take in to acount rechroming or reconditioning if needed. I kinda need an idea pretty quick on this stuff.

I know for a fact that the rear fenders are one year only ( '67) due to the wheel arch being bigger because of the rear axle track was wider(long axle).  I think the front fenders were the same other than the headlight buckets.
When I bought a '67 a while back , it had one straight over rider and one sloped over rider on the rear. It was a very close fit when the deck was opened.
I wonder if you have what we use to call a "Virgin Island" spec. car ?
     VW AG could tell you.

I'm having alot of trouble getting an estimate on this critter. Most won't even touch it. Nobody seems to want to hammer out a price for the fender apron or bumper unless I got the JC *hitney route. The insurance company is being cool about it so far.

Hey Zen I might take you up on the overriders. dont need a deck lid(yet) But I might start stockin up on 67 parts after this crisis is over.I know of a 67 in clevland that I'm gonna check for parts and I got a lead on another out of town. It's not impossible just a pain. I gotta few more places to check around town before I go on a out of town hunting trip.

The rear bumper blade and brackets are the same as earlier cars and you can still buy a decent blade new (don't get the cheap one unless you like the look of rust . . . go for the "show chrome" one).  There is place in Chickamuga that can re-chrome the overriders and you would be sitt'n pretty there.

If push comes to shove, I think you can use 68 and up fenders if you don't mind filling and drilling . . . aren't the taillight mounting holes the only differance between a 67 and 68?

AHHHH68 nooo! I got a 68 sittin here no they got them funky big bumpers.I whopped the fender with a rubber mallet it'll be ok. it could be repaired fine. that German steel is tuff wish the bumper was a tuff. Considering most of my car is spray paint quality i think the $2500 the insurance is cuttin me will work out fine. The apron can be massaged back to look fineas well as the fender. that leaves alot for reconditioning a bumper. I think now is a good time to start ordering the parts for restoration. I got a very few things to fix sheetmetal wise, then I need to find somebody that'll take it down to metal. The wifey wants seafoam and white I think I like it.

not sure but I might go for a 67 euro look on the bumpers as well as the rest of the car. it had euro taillights origanally. maybe it was a euro 4 lugger who knows? This car is weird! The side molding holes look like they were drilled in,as if the car had no molding. Theres just some weird stuff here and there on it.I tried to fit 67 headlights and they dont fit the buckets but the fenders are 67 fenders. I was told you could tell by the horn grill spacing?Crazy car.
