I've been under the car several times and I do not remember seeing these "tins" between the cylinders but I may have missed them.  i will look tonight.  If they are not there are they easily put on? There is the "sled" attached though -I do remember seeing that. Should I leave the timing at 32 degrees?   I'd really like any or all of you to see this car, would be a huge help I am sure of that. - something Im missing BUT I am pretty sure the problem would stick out like a sore thumb if you had eyes on it.

oh I forgot to mention!  Nick I have not re-adjusted the valves again.  When I did, i used the video to the absolute letter.  I feel very confident with that.  The hot engine was evident long before I did the valves too that one time.

Later fan shroud + original non Doghouse fan = hot engine, am I right David?
You have to put the wider fan in the later dog house.
That could be the problem, just bolted the stock unit back into the newer style dog house.

To the OP:
David doesn't live very far from the cruise in location...
Drop by one evening and he'll tell you where to go next.
Just do not show up in a bus or he'll tell you where to go period.
LOL,
KC
It really depends on which Non-Dog house fan it is. I have seen non-DH fans that looked the same as DH fans. Some with more blades , some with less.  Hey ,Kevin may even have a 40 hp fan. Who knows without knowing what to look for.

You can see them right above the push rod tubes between the clys.  They are not easily put on. Look first . If they are not present then we will discuss what to do then.  Do you have any history on this engine ?   What is your engine case # (right under the gen./ oil filler stand) .  It should start with the letter H .

Check what I said on my last post.   Like Russ said,we have a Cruise-In on Friday the 7th. I could look at it then if you want to wait that long. We haven't been to a cruise in a while but I will be  there on the 7th or we could try for some day next week except Tue at my house.

A quick note on something I read.  The Samba has a string/forum of discussions regarding the oil temps.  In one- it mentions that an older beetle with an unslotted deck engine lid (like mine) with a rebuilt engine 1600 and a doghouse shroud WILL have a dcrease in cooling air at higher road speeds.  Just wanted to mention.

I have off set hinge mounts on mine ('63).  You could get a tennis ball and cut a slot in it then put it on hook at the bottom of the deck lid.
I needed to do this on the Autostick beetle I had in that it just ran hotter than a regular beetle, worked well.  I could tell the difference.

Another thing to consider is that there is always a differenct between thermal tools and what they read, exact numbers may not be as important as various different readings of the same instrument. I would encourage anyone to install a oil temp and a cylinder head temp gauge, not just the hotrods. VDO makes some basic but functional gauges that work well for this.

These gauges are more important IMHO than a fuel level gauge. You can get a idea of fuel level with a stick, you need to know for sure what your engine is DOING in order to figure out how to correct it, if it even needs to be corrected, it could be something as simple as driving habits.  You will be amazed at how fast cyl head temps climb when driving at 45 mph up a MILD grade let alone a real hill at 60. The gauges give you a instant glimps of what is happening for your engine, and what you do or don't need to do about it.

Here is a good read on the importance of temp guages.
