63 speedo removal and turn signal questions

« on: December 05, 2013, 06:07:46 PM »
I'm back with another quest for knowledge.
I want to remove my speedo and replace the colored lenses for the oil and gen light. I guess the old ones dried up and blew away. I seem to remember loosening two nuts on the back of the speedo and pushing it out towards the inside of the car.
This one is STUCK and won't move. I have a big mallet, but thought I'd ask first. No info in any of the manuals I have.
Second, the turn signal stalk, when moved to activate the flashers will not stay in position but goes back to it's resting position when I release it. If I hold it long enough for the flashers to blink a couple of times it often stays where it should and works correctly. ????What's up with that?? Do I need another switch?
It's my 63 daily driver beetle. Thanks!

I think you loosen the nuts, rotate and remove from the back. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

The turn signal probably needs to either be removed and inspected or replaced.

Thanks for your reply. I have done this in the past, and your suggestion sounds correct, but this speedo seems to be glued in place. I think the rubber gasket is petrified.
