62 Beetle gas smell

« on: July 08, 2009, 06:45:46 PM »
When i go aroung a turn when i have more than half tank of gas gas runs out the vent tube on to the beam,  i was wondering if there was a solution for this,  the beetle is so low it scrapes the ground,  the other day i hit a manhole cover and the bettle started riding different, i had hit the lower adjuster and the lower spring had slipped,  manged to get it back with a large hammer,  gas and sparks don't mix.

Well Duh !!   I would think that standing the car on its nose would cause that considering where the filler pipe is .   You might run a  longer vent hose back "up hill" , put a vertical loop in it then stick it through some hole behind the tank and out of the compartment or you might do something really clever like raising the front of the car back up a tad  I really don't understand why anybody would want to make road graders out of their cars, but it is your Coal Truck do what you want.

It shouldnt do what your describing unless you got the rear jacked up higher than the front. Level it out and when ya build beams for really low cars invert the lower adjuster. Rick knows that trick.

Kill is such a strong and permanent solution...how bout a good talking to. Oh wait you already tried that? Oh well go ahead and let lose with the dasher parts then. If a Honda didnt do the job I doubt dasher parts will either.

FYI my beam on my 62 never touched anything until the day it was totaled.
With drop spindles and the right settings you shouldn't be hittin stuff unless your offroading the poor thing. :?

My stuper rests way higher in the  front than the back.  Kind of a reverse look, i guess...    I leak gas out the filler  every left turn too.  I am converting Stupie so the gas hole is on the top of the roof.  SC

Go measure the height of the manhole cover and raise the front beam so that it's a few mm above the height of the manhole cover.  David's happy because you raised it, Scott's happy because you lowered it, the car is happy because you're not trying to rip it to shreds and you're happy because you don't have to spend money to fix the car.

It's a win win.    :D

Thats dedication right there. I just dont hit things that sit higher than the road. Of course I hit cars head on so I dunno. Run 135's on the front and raise it up if ya cant avoid that monster manhole cover. Sounds like it's after ya.

You just get distracted, i go down the same road 3 or more times a day,  the beetle is not as low in the rear so i am not sure if that has any thing do do,  i don't scrape that often,  these roads are rough.  The car can't go any higher with out changing the adjusters,  rick welded thenm in at a little lower pitch so it is as high as it will go.

I got a longer piece of vent hose and ran a loop above the gas tank, no more gas smell going around turns.  Finally got some window rubber and am dreading putting it in with the chrome strip, i hear its tricky

I love the whole idea of keeping the car original, but if the sun or headlights are on this thing you can't see though it and it leaks in the rain, since its a daily,  i need a new window!
