I'm having problems with my 6 volt gen. too. Not as bad as Travis' though. My bearings are bad but it's still charging and it's got a new regulator on it. It keeps my battery hot as a firecracker but it's getting noisy. Is there a 6 volt alternator conversion? If so, is it with a built-in regulator? Is it as pricey as I would think? Would it be better to convert to 12 volt? To do that, do you have to change the starter? Will a 12 volt starter bolt right up? By the way, what's the trick to getting the fan pully to act right when you go back on with the belt. I kept having problems with the nut tightening down waaay before the belt was tight enough. I left the shims alone and had the inner slots lined up. I finally just sort of "lucked out" when I got the pulley to pull together. The belt is pretty hard and cracky, by cracky. Too many stupid questions, Retired?
No alt. option.  If you want to change to 12 volt you will have to change the gen stand and all the 6V stuff in the car . Lights , radio etc etc. You can leave the 6V starter . IT will spin the heck out of the engine. Instant start and will last a long time. You cannot use a 12V starter as you would have to change the flywheel/ bushing OR just replace the Gen bearings.

Okay-I'm sticking with my 6 volt system (the miracle man is going to put bearings in the generator). If that doesn't work I'm going to load up the back seat with my golf cart batteries, do that test wiring technique (the one that Retired Tech recomended to "motor" the generator), remove the spark plugs and just use the generator as a motor.  Hey Retired, I'll bet ol' Warren Marion could make this happen!

I don't know how to swim. I just walked out. Only well qualified VW MECHANICS are taught how to do the "Hike-The-Gene" trick. Even the Grasshopper doesn't know how to do that. He hasn't gotten that far along yet.

Not sure of the answer but sounds like you need a reg,ask Rick about it.
You can also buy an 8v batery and that will help cure your 6volt woes as well.

This is the first time I've seen anyone suggest a 8v battery as a 6v alternative. Interesting! You can spend a lot of time cleaning connectors on a 43 year old car, even if it is pretty clean. Clever! Do you really think it will work? Any testimonials??

It will work but the best bet is to get everything cleaned up and working properly to begin with. If it isnt then the 8v will not solve all your 6 v woes.
The better bet is the optima 6 volt battery but it's exspensive.

Yeah I've seen multiple references to the Optima 6v. As soon as the 6v I'm driving right now dies...and it will die from exhaustion, I'll pick up an Optima. Thanks for your thoughts.
