6 volt charging system

« on: April 27, 2009, 06:40:15 AM »
My 62 Beetle is having charging issues,  i researched several manuals and the internet and most of the info is on testing 12 volt systems, with the d+ and df labeled on the generator,  mine just has the 2 wires straight to the voltage regulator.  The warning light used to run dim,  then it ran bright, and then no light.  We tinkered with it this weekend, tapping on the regulator cuased the light to be bright for as few seconds then went out agian.  I could not find the odb 2 diag port so i need help!

Not sure of the answer but sounds like you need a reg,ask Rick about it.
You can also buy an 8v batery and that will help cure your 6volt woes as well.

I would bet on a reg also. We also had a problem with the head light switch causing a dim glow day and night. Some of those early 6 V system ran the main wire (red) from the rear to dash and connected to the light switch then back to the fuse panel. One of the early fixes was to put the main red wire directly to the fuse panel then pig tail it to the switch . Sounds weird but it worked. Feel and see if the switch gets really warm  with the lights on.
When you said no light ,did you mean it didn't come on running or not ? The blue wire off the reg. is your warning light. You can also put a volt meter to the terminal with the blue wire to check output . You need about 7.2 to work.
I not sure what you mean "odb diag port".

Dang Travis, You could have said  "obd 32 and I still don't what you are talking about.  You have to remember that my formal factory schooling stopped in 1972. The only thing I remember is " B.Y.O.B

There is no output, 6.2 volts and does not increase with rpm, i've read about undoing the vr and test the gen. only by grounding 1 wire, but i wasn't sure which one on the 6 volt gen.

Hell Fire !! CIS is still new stuff,    but any good MECHANIC can understand it.
You need a degree from MIT just to open the hood and replace some little $1200 "Flapping Thing" Thats what a TECHNICIAN learns to do.
Travis , I can't remember which wire to check but you  can take the belt off and run a jumper wire from the + (30) on the reg to the blue (light) "push on connector "  The gen. should start motoring if the gen is OK. You may or may not need to spin the gen by hand to get started. If it turns into a motor, I would try a Reg.  This is a trick we use to do at the dealer when the shop forman wasn't looking to help cool off the engine to adjust the valves.

You Betcha,   Don't forget I use to be a "Flat-Rate" Mech.  for about 45 years.   Time is money and this was the only way you could make a living when the labor rate at the dealer was $5.00 a hour but I had bought a house, had a new baby boy and a new '64 Beetle. Boy have times change

I'm having problems with my 6 volt gen. too. Not as bad as Travis' though. My bearings are bad but it's still charging and it's got a new regulator on it. It keeps my battery hot as a firecracker but it's getting noisy. Is there a 6 volt alternator conversion? If so, is it with a built-in regulator? Is it as pricey as I would think? Would it be better to convert to 12 volt? To do that, do you have to change the starter? Will a 12 volt starter bolt right up? By the way, what's the trick to getting the fan pully to act right when you go back on with the belt. I kept having problems with the nut tightening down waaay before the belt was tight enough. I left the shims alone and had the inner slots lined up. I finally just sort of "lucked out" when I got the pulley to pull together. The belt is pretty hard and cracky, by cracky. Too many stupid questions, Retired?
