3 point seat belts

« on: February 21, 2006, 03:02:56 PM »
We would like to install 3 point seatbelts in our '63 bug.  We purchased a set from Mid-america, but they came with no instructions whatsoever.  Although the kit was supplied with hardware, I suspect that the correct placement of the belts is critical both for security of the mounting and safety for the driver and passenger.

Has anyone done this and can you provide advice, measurements, templates, procedures or what have you?  This would sure be greatly appreciated.  I want to keep my sweet "Bug-eyed Sally" safe when she goes out for her fun jaunts.

Thanks   :D

I could be wrong, but I "think" your 63 should have the mounting points already welded into the tunnel and heater channels . . . and maybe even the door post.  If the car never had seat belts, they will be covered by the carpet and vinyl.  It might have been a year or two later before they started putting the seatbelt mounting points in 'em, but if I remember correctly, the 63 I used to have had them.  David (a.k.a. the Godfather, a.k.a. RetBugtech) should be able to tell you for sure.

Some of the '63s had just the 2 point lap belt. One mount in the tunnel and the other mount in the outer heat channel. I belive later in the year they added the 3rd mount on the door post, about head high. They should be in plain sight if they had them. A 2inch plastic washer with a oversize Phillips looking screw. I don't recall them being hidden from sight.  I bought a brand new '64 that didn't come with seat belts or a way to easely just bolt them in.  Go figure

Hope this helps.  Keep in mind that these are the non-retractable variety.

  Don't strip the lawn chair just yet . . . I may have a line on some belts.  If you do use lawn chair webbing, make sure you keep sunblock rubbed on them or you'll have to replace them every couple of years.   8)
