2178 cc engine help.

« on: October 02, 2010, 09:54:23 PM »
...would you take my 2178cc engine in trade along with some cash. it has an engle 120 cam, 0 mile clutch, 94 x 82 pistons, stage 1 port and polish, full flow, stroker case, balanced and bored. all in all its a very nice engine. i was running a single webber 44idf on her and she screamed. 'chubby' exhaust w/ 0 miles on it. 009 distributor. blah blah blah...

Can somone tell me the approximate performance / value of this engine.
Dude says that its worth about $1600
Wants to trade it with cash for the ASBug.
He has already seen the Beetle. He bought the '73 fenders from me.
"Girlfriend cannot drive a stick..." his words not mine... LOL.

I do not know any thing but 1600's.
I'm thinking that I need to just get this and the cash and hold this engine till I find something to set it in.

Any way, I know that there are alot better Hot rod gear heads here, and I am smart enough to realize that this engine is over my head...
I know enough to ask about the who / when the engine was done, but I am sure there are more questions I should ask.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
KC

More   "...I have all the receipts for the engine build up. it was built by Pro-Flow in Hiram (GA). everything was brand new from PF when Joe had the engine built. he had it in his 59 when i traded him my 60 for the 59. the engine has about 2000 miles on it. and i swear on all that is holy that i never put my foot down on it. that isn't my style of driving. Jake Raby teases me about how feather footed i am, lol. anyway, when i tore into the 59 to fix all the body screw ups the previous owner had done to it (suicide hinges held on with weld and fiberglass, etc) i rebuilt the engine again. the heads have been redone. it has a brand new oil cooler with less than 400 miles on b4 the rebuild. right now its only in its long block assembly state..."

Any way, this sounds like a pretty BA engine.  I haven't even got a trans that could take this engine.
I just want to see if the jive I get from this cat (60's slang) is on the up and up...
Any info would be appreciated (David, Bugnut, Rick?)

Thanks,
KC

I would pass, but that's just me.  Bottom line is that they are fun untill they come apart (not if, but when).  And when they do they are big money to fix.  Scott had a dilema over this recently, and discoverd just how much they cost when they break.  If memory serves, he sold off the pieces to a guy who built performance engines, built a stock engine to replace it, and said never again.  I def. don't think i would do the trade of a used performance engine for a running driving car.  period.

Hand grenades are fun to play with, but they get a little expensive ‘cause you can only pull the pin once.   ;)

Can we all say AMEN !!!!!    K.C, These things are like Tanks. You work on them all week just to drive on Sat. Tear it down on Sunday ,go get the bank loan on Monday ,have it ready on Friday night, blow it up Saturday and then start the process over again. Way to much fun ???   Somewhere along the way you may have to go to the job. ::) ::) ;D

But on a somewhat positive note . . . IF . . . no, wait, IF (that's a big IF) I were going to have an engine like this built, I would probably have Pro-Flow do the work.   8)

Frankly ,I don't care how good someone builds one of these Monster engines , but somehow its just hard for me to belive or accept the idea that you can take a 60 hp and make it into a 200- 250 hp engine and have it last more than 6,000 miles if you do any spirited driving. Why wouldn't you not drive the Snot out of it ?   After all isn't that the reason you put that Monster in there in the first place ?  The Guy who built the engine is the only one in the "Cat Bird Seat". He gets all your money and doesn't even have to guarantee that it gets off the lot. I have built a few big engines in years past and the only thing I would guarantee was that the engines would not fall out of the car ;D ;D
K.C. Did I read the post right that this Guy has already rebuilt the engine after only 2,000 miles ? ???

. . . IF I wanted to spend the money and build an engine that big, I'd probably opt for a Jake Raby built type 4.  It would cost a lot more, but at least it would have a fighting chance of making it past 10,000 miles.  And IF I had an engine like this you can bet I'd keep my foot in it until it came apart!   ;D

Speaking of guarantees on these kinds of engines, something Bob Hoover once wrote comes to mind.  It was something like "Hand grenades don't come with a warranty either . . . for pretty much the same reason."

Oh, ok, I'll play devil's advocate here.  The engine is a grenade and every time you hit the gas the pin slips out a little further, this is a given.  If you've never driven anything with one of these monster engines in it before - it's a whole lotta fun before the boom.

I worked at a small shop that had built a single cab that had one of these engines in it complete with a transmission that could take the abuse.  One day when we were nearly done with the project the shop owner asked me if I wanted to drive it around the block.  He said "if you want to have some fun, put it in first, rev it to about 3 grand and sidestep the clutch".  If you've never seen the back end of a single cab hop off the ground it's an interesting sight to behold.

After that, I took it around the block to make sure it was running ok - it was.  It had just rained and the roads were a bit slick, I was going about 25 or 30 in 3rd gear and tapped the gas.  As the back end started to swing around the only thought going through my head was "don't hit the telephone pole, don't hit the telephone pole".  Fortunately, I managed to keep it on the road and after a bit of recovery time I immediately turned around and drove back to the shop.

So if you want to have a bit of fun for a short while, get the engine.  If you don't, and there are several very valid reasons not to that have already been stated, then hang onto the ASBug for a bit longer.

Ok,update.
I am SERIOUSLY piqued.
He is also offering a 1972 Transporter that the intial photos show as a darn good condition.  All the photos show a basically rust free bus.
The 1700 runs, but has a Webber instead of the dual carbs. I am thinking this is a net zero gain in that the duals have a bad rep.
Brakes are toast and the interior is dingy I will need a middle seat, but this available from a local source.
The bus has set for the past 2 years and will need a good cleaning.
It has some surface rust here and there, but looks ok.

He is getting videos and more shots, but I am interested.
I have other offers as well, and am wanting to weigh it out, but I HAVE been wanting a bus.  Wish it was a Type 1, but this is correctable, LOL.
