1977 Westfalia Tires

« on: March 03, 2009, 09:08:04 AM »
I need to put tires on my son's bus this weekend. First of all where can I get the right tires at a good price. Second, are they open on the weekends? Thanks in advance.

I think it's unlikely you'll find any place locally that would have correct bus tires in stock. You need reinforced sidewall 185R14 tires with at least a 'C' load range for proper handling, safety, and to support the weight of the vehicle. LRD would be even better.

Continental Vanco 8s are a good choice, Continental is a German manufacturer and OEM supplier of tires to VW to this day. Yokohama Y356 also fits, that's what I have on my bus but they are not all season tires. Hankook RA08 is also supposed to be a good bus tire. All of these run about $75 per tire I think.

I would probably order a set of tires online from Tire Rack or Bus Depot and have them mounted/balanced locally. Do not let a shop talk you into purchasing passenger tires for your bus. They will not support the weight and it will handle like crap.

Thanks Russ. What about that shop out on Hwy. 58? Or would it just be cheaper for me to order them?

R&M Automotive? Give Rick a call. Maybe he can order some for you and I'm sure he could mount them. He wouldn't sell you the wrong tires.

What about these? They have a D load rating.

Those would work, I think Vanco 2 are newer than Vanco 8s actually. They are summer tires like my Yokohamas.

The 8 in Vanco 8 refers to the 8 ply sidewall.  If that is a correct correlation. Then Vanco 2 would only be 2 ply and would not be reinforced.

Oh, in that case you don't want them. Didn't know about that.

Everything I can find about the "D" rating states that it is an 8ply tire.

One thing that concerns me is that it mentions the Vanco 2s are designed for today's van that drives more like a passanger car.
