I know some one who had set more than one engine compartment on fire using carb spray to find a vacuum leak when the car backfires or you have a bad spark plug wire arcing to the engine block,  bye bye eyebrows and wiring harness
True , Thats why I said : I'm not going to tell you to use carb spray. Only SC can use it. He doesn't explode ,just makes an ash of himself :o

Mystery solved . The coil was failing when it got hot . Replaced it and it cranked up like new . I did find some small bits of trash in the carb bowls and cleaned that out but the coil was the main problem . Thanks for all the help guys !   ;D

Great !!  Like I said many times , 90% of carb problems turn out to be electrical.  ;) Now come see us.

I do need a resource for syncronizing the twin carbs if you know of a shop locally ?  The one on 58( R&B I think ) no longer messes with air cooled dubs .

No shop in the area really messes with them anymore due to the fact they are nearly impossible to make money on anymore, and I quit doing work at home a while back.  Simply not enough time for them anymore.  I'd reccomend picking up one of the synching tools and a manual, and trying your own hand at it.  They're pretty straight forward.  You will need to fiddle with them every change of the season anyhoo.   ;D

This has turned into quite a problem around here . R&M was the last VW air-cool friendly shop . All the rest of us professional career air-cool mechanics are either retired, gone into hiding, gone to the great VW shop in the sky. There is some talent around here but most have a real job and no time to devote to the care and feeding of our air-cool critters. There is a lot of good info here but you will be on your own to get the job done for the most part. Maybe someone will step up out of the blue, but I won't whole my breath. Kinda sad.

Kinda sad?  It's worse than that!   :o   The good news is that the knowledge is still there, and there are lots of folks who will share that knowledge for free . . . but when it comes to turning the wrenches, this is becoming more and more of a DIY hobby.

Ok. there is a guy I use when I just do not want to do stuff.  He is retired Navy, ASE Certified mechanic who works on my junk for a reasonable cost.  I sent a few people to him with ACooled stuff and hav not heard any complaints.  His name is Jessie Kell, he owns Kell's Bug Barn, he has been building AC rails and sand buggies for many years.  His # is 706-217-9010.  Let him know I sent you - KC Matthews.
I have been doing more and more myself so I haven't used him much in the last 4 months or so, but he has never attempted to gouge me or anyone I have sent him.
He is located near Varnel, GA.
Good luck,
KC

There is also Herman down at A-1 auto service in Dalton, GA. (Behind American Foreign Auto Parts) He is a VW trained mechanic who is just a little more expensive than Jessie.
He does ACooled stuff as well as water cooled stuff.  Was trained at Al Johnson's VW so he is fluent in Volvo as well.  He is a nice helpful guy who (at no charge) explained all the vacuum leak areas I should investigate on the Vert. I also had him do the timing belt/H2O/tensioner/etc. on the Passat's 1.8T.
His # is 706-529-5200.
Ok well all my secrets are out now.... now when I need them they will be booked up...
LOL, KC
