1970 westy wheel questions.

« on: December 03, 2009, 08:59:25 AM »
Probably getting a 1970 Westy a week from Saturday.  It currently has good 14" wheels and tires.  It has the wide 5 bolt pattern wheels and I am
Wondering about the option of putting some 15" beetle wheels on the bus.  I am concerned about the weight difference.  If I am able to upgrade to the 15's then getting tires with the right load range is alot easier.

It was expensive when I purchased the correct Kuhmo tires for the '76 that I sold back in the summer.

Getting the '70 because of the wide 5's and the type 1 engine.  Bus will need a new canvas and I am alittle apprehensive about that.  Rust seems limited to the rear battery corner.

Will post more info as I get it.

Thanks,
KC

I would think that the type-1 5 lug wheel would be to skinny to run on a van much less a Westy.  Only 4 1/2" wide. I would think the cost of widen a 15" Bug rim and buying the cheaper tire would cost more than if you left the 14" rims and bought new tires. I guess somebody makes a after market 15" Rim but  I feel sure that you would spend even more money. You need to put the very best rated (sidewall)  tire on these vans. But its your Coal Truck so do whatever you want.
