1967 beetle overheat/generator red light

« on: May 14, 2013, 06:49:35 AM »
I have a question for you experts that is baffling me.  When I turn my key to the ignition position (not start) I get the 2 warning lights illuminated ( red and green) as I should, then going on to the start position position both lights go out. My problem is- after I've driven the car awhile and it has warmed up and I shut the car off, if I repeat the process of going to the ignition position- now only my oil/green light test comes on and not the red light.  Why is this?  do I have overheat indication while engine is warm and driving?  After the car cools down for awhile and I repeat the process I now get both lights as I'm supposed to at the ignition position.   This problem with the red light not testing only happens when the car has warmed up. Note- the green light tests with engine hot or cold regardless. I'm worried I don't have overheat protection when driving and if the belt breaks will not illuminate my red light.
Thanks guys
Kevin

The 2 lights should stay on even when going to the start position. When the engine starts the lights go off indicating that you have oil pressure and the Gen. is charging. I assume the engine starts right away ???. I think you MAYBE have more than one problem. Ing switch ?  voltage reg ? poor  wiring connections ? poor grounds  or all of above. I know you didn't want to hear all of that, but you are up there and I'm down here. I kind of lean toward the Ing. switch but CHECK further before buying a new one. It might be something simple. Most of the time it is. If any of the lights come on while driving, STOP

Thank you-yes the lights (both) stay on until the engine has started then they go out as expected.  Its just odd that both lights come on (as needed) at the start up when the engine is cold but then after i run it awhile and restart it -only the green light comes on.  That is the odd part- thats what worries me about the overheat indication- im afraid i don't have "broken fan belt indication" since the red light never came on during the pre engine start sequence EXCEPT during the initial cold engine start.  If this makes any sense???  Why would having the engine warmed up prevent the red light from comming on during the engine start up??

Get it warmed up, verify the light isn't coming on, remove belt (quickly so it doesn't cool down), test fire it (very briefly so it doesn't get too hot), see if the light comes on when the fan isn't spinning.

If the light comes on, then you can rest assured that everything is ok.

If not, I guess you'll have to fix it!!! Maybe the regulator?

If the light comes on with the belt off doesn't mean everything is OK. Something had to cause the problem in the first place. You may be right on a reg. going out. '67 had a problem with the wires corroding or coming off at the reg. Pick your rear seat up and check the BLUE wires at the reg. and make sure that the seat frame hasn't knock them off or loosen them up and that the ground wire(Brown) is connected from the reg to the body and the reg mounting screws are tight. I would still check the gen. output just for the heck of it.
