1965 with loud knocking noise

« on: September 29, 2012, 08:49:49 PM »
I just bought a 1965 beetle that was listed as having a "blown motor."  I got it home and with a little work got the engine started.  After warming up, I tried revving the engine a bit.  It had some loud tell-tale knocking noise.

Here are my questions:

1. Is it a thrown rod?  Seems to be one knock per revolution, and pretty loud metal on metal.

2. Is it rebuildable?  I think it's a stock 1200, even though it has a 12v generator and battery, I'm certain that the starter is a 6 volt one.

3. If I buy a rebuilt engine to replace it, should I go with a 1600?  If so, can I mount a 180mm (6 volt) flywheel to a 1600 style long block?  If I go with just a longblock, and not a turnkey, will my stock 1200 parts fit on a 1600?

Sounds like you have a worn crank or rod bearing on one cyl.

Anything can be rebuilt. Look at Steve Austin. Lol!!
As long as the rod bearings are not tissue thin and the crank journals are able to be polished, that's good. If the crank lost a dowel and is moving in and out of a main case stand, that means line boring your case.
Bumping to a 1600 is a choice decision unless your a purist. 12v the whole thing  for sure.
Building your own is something to remember. Just sayin'.
Another knock noise could be the starter is a 12v with a 6v bushing still in and its rocking back and forth. Although she would lock on you at some point if it were moving that much. But you never know;(
I can't remember what interchanges exactly. Fan housing can. Jug tins maybe. Gen stand?? Exhaust and intake?? Gland nut, yes. Sorry, not much help there.
Anyway, good vibes!!!

Cheers,

mek

#1-  Bet on a burned rod brg.( this is a educated guess) DO NOT DRIVE !!!   It could and will throw a rod through the case.  #2- yes you can.   #3- You can go with a 1600 but  Yes and No on the flywheel.  Some transmissions will not accept the larger dia. 12 V  flywheel without grinding off some "stuff" inside the bell housing.  Clylinder covers, intake, muffler etc. will not interchange.

Several years ago I sold a guy an engine I had for a little cash and his old engine that was "knocking."  When I started to tear his old engine down, I found the rocker shaft on one side was loose.  Torqued it down and started it up . . . no knock.  Chances are it's a worn/burnt up rod bearing, but sometimes you get lucky.

Yep, nothing like a loose nut getting re-torqued and saving the day.=))

I'm not sure how far you have gone with this, but you may want to run the engine with the belt off and see if the noise is still there.  I have heard more than 1 knocking generator/alternator and fan assembly. The keyway gets hammered out from loose nuts or incorrect/not matched parts and can make a ton of noise that sounds like a rod banging around. Just a thought.

Well, it was knocking a little at high rpms and only when I let off the gas.  Then, I tried driving around the block and it got a lot worse.  It's definitely coming from the engine case.

I was very close to reselling this car and getting another one, but I've decided to try and save it (i.e. turn into a money pit).  Now, I've gotta relive all the knuckle busting fun of pulling a VW engine.  I'm guessing that if I pull the engine and take everything apart, I'll be able to fix the problem and put it back together again?  I can't type that with a strait face.  I think I'll try google to find a VW shop in my area, Jacksonville NC.

Get a good manual, take your time, ask a lot of questions as you go.  It's not hard, but you gott'a do it right . . . and it's cheapest to do it right the FIRST time.  I know that from experiance  ::)  When it comes to asking questions using this forum (any internet forum for that matter) remember that a picture is worth a thousand words.  You can do it!   8)
