1959 6 Volt no start

« on: May 01, 2008, 09:01:16 PM »
We have 1959 Rag Beetle restored, with new starter. At times the car will not turn over until we slightly bump starter, no rhyme or reason when. This is still 6 volt, new battery & starter. HELP IF CAN, I DONT NEED HER STRANDED WITHOUT ME THERE TO BUMP IT!

Is this starter a Bosch rebuilt or a generic ?  Never had much luck with rebuilt starters from anyone other than Bosch.  Do the gen and oil pressure light in the speedo dim down when you go to the starting postion ?   If so you may have a starter problem. Does your tranny have a ground strap/cable from the tranny to the pan ?   You can check the voltage at the Ing. switch and voltage at the solinoid( the little wire on the starter) .  Ing. switch ??
We use to install a Ford starter relay on the starter back in the day.
These old 6 volt systems could drive you nuts at times

Glad the solinoid worked.  Its been a long time since I had to deal with the old "no starter contact"  6 volt system.   We also used a Neihoff AL- 162 relay.   You guys are really stiring up some old cobwebs.
