'89 Cabriolet Starting Issue?

« on: September 17, 2009, 08:34:15 PM »
I was cranking the Cabby and had a loud pop followed by some smoke from the engine compartment, could not identify where smoke was originating from. Now I am getting nothing when I turn the  ignition. The dash lights come on and do not dim when turning the key. I am tinking that this is a starter issue, like in the earlier Westy posting, but the smoke has me puzzled. Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

loud pop and smoke not good!,  i would check the battery,  then the cables,  then you need to test the starter, you can do it in the car by appling power to the small wire going too the starter, the starter should engage and turn then.  be sure the car is not in gear.
