'74 Super, hood release question

« on: February 08, 2006, 03:28:11 PM »
Not very technical, but....the hood release never works on the first try. I have to walk out front, whack the hood or press down on the lift handle, walk back to the glove box release lever and operate it again. Whacking first does not work. Gotta press release, whack, press release again. Don't see an adjustment option. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ron

It may just need to be lubricated.

Hit it with a shot of spray-on and contorted myself in an attempt to find some sort of adjustment. No improvement. Thanks.

Try this. With the hood open, look at the lower latch . You should see a little tap sticking in and covers about 2/3 of the receiver hole. ( this hole is were the upper latch fits into).  Get your Buddy or S.O. to operate the release handle serveral times and see if the little tab pulls back and uncovers the receiver hole. If it doesn't pull back enough, you can adjust the wire cable by loosening the little set screw and pull some of the slack out of the wire cable. With that done ,you can ajust the upper latch ( the stob with the coil spring) by loosening the 13mm nut on the back side of the latch, screw the stob out like you are going to take off. Move it about 1/2 turn at a time and lower the hood and press down to latch. You may have to do this serveral times to get it to lock. DO NOT SLAM THE HOOD. When you mash the release handle the hood should jump up about 1/2inch. You should feel some resistance when you push down to latch. Keep adjusting the stob until you feel the resistance of the coil spring.
If all your latches / handle and cable are in good shape ,if should work for you. I hope this helps now that you are confused.

Excellent advise. I had found the 13mm "adjustable" but thus far have been unable to get on the Significant Other's appointment calander for assistance.

Thanks,

Ron
