'74 Bus smoking in the boy's room

« on: March 14, 2006, 11:06:27 AM »
Jeannie Hixon (the lady with the free bus who took it to Harry Guinn to be fixed) emailed me today with a problem.  Her son's '74 is sitting at Billingsley Automotive off of Grays Rd. (behind the Sports Page bar).  They pulled it in there with it smoking up a storm. The engine compartment is coated with a film of oil.  There is smoke coming from the junction of the oil breather box and the case.  When I took the box off to check the seal, the seal wasn't lined up on the box that well.  Also, the hole where the box sits was filled up with smoke.  Before I started it, I checked the oil and it was maybe a 1/2 qt. low.  She said it was running real bad when it was hot, but running normally when it was cold.
It being a '74, that should make it a 1.7 liter?  It is carbuerated.
Why would it smoke so much?
If it doesn't get fixed, it will probably end up here in the "For Sale" forum.
I have pictures of it, but they are "too big" to add as attachments.

Travis , Did you run the engine with the breather box off . If you did and the engine still puffed and smoked from the case, it could have burned a piston or lost a valve seat which allow exhaust gases to enter and pressurize the crankcase. Did it appear to run on all 4 clys?

No, I did not run it with the breather box off...was worried about slinging oil (on me, not the engine compartment!).  If I stop by there tomorrow, I might try that.
It did appear to run on all 4 cylinders.  It was running pretty smooth, not jerking or bucking.  I did notice what I thought to be the starter running long after it should have stopped (which is as soon as the key is back in the "run" position).
This would make someone a good "running around" bus if these problems can be remedied...as long as you don't care what it looks like.  From what I got from her, her son might be wanting to sell this one to get a bus in better condition (because of his limited mechanical abilities, I think).

Here are some pictures.  I tried to upload an .avi video of the engine running, but it didn't upload.  I'll try it again.

Word is, that she has $1400 in the engine rebuild and whatever else Harry Guinn did.  I don't know what else she has in it, but I think she might want $2000-$2500 for it.  Who knows what it will bring, but $2000 sounds more realistic.
