" My new engine "

« on: September 18, 2010, 06:55:45 PM »
Just a quick question. I got the engine from KC that was originally with my love bug. It is an AH case. Most of the parts are there as we found out but i will need some things replaced i am sure.

What i need to know is " Where is the best or good place to get the parts i will need for it "? I do not want cheap stuff that will break but i do not have a lot of money to spend on it. A few things at a time. Also if i am not able to do the work correctly who here would be good to rebuild it for me. I know there are a number here that i would trust to do the job. If there is any one interested then pm me and we can talk about it............. Rob

For new air-cooled parts locally, in addition to Tri-State Imports in Cleveland and Mainly Foreign in Chattanooga, there is a place in Dalton called American Foreign . . . locally, those are the big three.  It's been two or three years since I've bought anything from them, but Al Johnson's VW dealership in Dalton did stock a LOT of air-cooled parts as well, and their prices were usually competitive with, or better than, those three parts stores.

Swap meets at shows are usually where you'll find your best bargins . . . prices are usually competitive with mail order, but you get to see the parts before you hand over hard earned cash and find the parts are junk when they arrive, PLUS you don't have to pay for shipping, and most of the time you won't be charged sales tax either.

If you end up going mail order, I like CIP1.com and Mid America Motorworks . . . but there are tons of choices when it comes to mail order.

Thanks guys for the info. Tri-state in cleveland i like better than mainly foriegn because i have never had to return a bad part to tri - state. However i am getting my shopping list together for the engine and my i need these used parts for the back yard body rebuild as i type this. I will be putting the i need these ussed parts list on the forums when done and see what every one might have in their sheds etc.

Thanks again for all the help on my newest project. ..............  Rob

Rob, Best parts are not cheap anymore. You need find out what the engine  needs to make a good and dependable unit. If you don't have the $$$$ don't do anything until you can afford it. Rick( I think I can speak for him here) and I both will not put a engine together with poor parts.  This is the best advice I can give you at this point.

Trust me when i say this, " I will not put cheap parts in my engine "! I may not be the sharpest tac in the box but even i know that it is better to put good parts in the engine when ya have the time and money. That way you do not have to rebuild it again in the future and spend more money on it. I have enough to do on the bug's body and interior and electrical before i start the engine rebuild. I may even get a friend that is porsche mechanic down at the dealership to help rebuild the engine when the time comes. I figure if he can rebuild those engines mine will be a sinch.

you can spend alot of money building a junk motor with 1/2 @ssed stuff or you can spend a bit more and do it right. For the record the last one I cobbled together for you could have been pretty decent if you would have waited and bought a few more new items. I have learned and theres no way I will ever build a motor from anything other than alll new parts..regardless of what the owner wants.

Get a case...have it align bored...buy everything new. THE END.
oh and get someone to put it all together for you....second thought just go down to Mainly and buy one David built.problem solved.

I remember well on that last engine you built for me. Worked well for me at the time but this time i will definatly have it done right. I have 2 people in mind to do the building ( you could be number 3 if ya want to be... ;D ) but i have to get the money together first.

I know i will need a couple pieces of engine tin and the generator stand ( if KC can not find the one that was with it ). Also will need a gas tank and filler tube so when the engine is done it can be fed the gas it needs.

I have no intent to build any more motors.  I just dont have the setup to work on anything and by the time I do again I'll be back In NC. I kinda decided that I would stop doing work for others and just do my own. Nothing personell it just a PITA and really theres no great money to be made doing it. For those that are still building in todays market it's more of a hobby than a job.

I do understand what you are saying Scott. I was just kidding about you doing it. I have at least 2 others in mind for the job when i get the money together for the build with new parts and as i am not in a big hurry to get it built there is no big rush. I have enough stuff to do on it before the motor work.

Which engine tins do you need? I am pretty certain I have a generator stand or two. I'll have to check if you're interested.

He needs an altenator stand, he has an alternator and the tin, but not the stand.

Ive switched gears and went to 40hp stock motors...I wouldnt mind learning a bit more about 36hp as for building any more motors id rather drink jet fuel and piss on a brush pile as to mess with it.

You would love old 36's. Good parts maybe be getting a little scarce to find though. Do the job right and you can hardly hear them run.
