This is a trip over MLK weekend announced by Jeff Geisen on The Samba. It starts Saturday, January 17th and goes through Monday the 19th.

This year the trip starts at Vintage VW in Jasper, GA and and travels up through NC with primitive camping along the Natahala River.

If you'd like to go, full details are available here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=615787

I did my best to map out the route and points of interest based on the description.

Last year's trip was a different route but it was a lot of fun, photos available here: http://www.volksfolks.org/gallery/events/mlk-trip-january-2014/

I'll be leaving Chattanooga early morning on Saturday headed for Jasper, which is where the meetup point is. Let me know if you want to join.

This was a great trip! About 8 buses met up at Vintage VW in Jasper, GA on Saturday morning and we picked up a couple more along the way. I think the total was 3 Vanagons and 7 buses.

We departed Georgia and headed up into the mountains in North Carolina. The orignaly plan was to stay at Standing Indian campground but it was closed for the season. The next choice was to travel down a forest service road and find a spot for some primitive camping along the Nantahala, but that road was closed as well. So we came back through the nearest town (I think it was Bryant, NC) and found a commercial campground. It was closed, but someone called the owner (who lived across the street) and he agreed for us to stay there overnight. It overlooked the river and we had full power hookups as well!

Sunday morning we got up and hit the road again, this time stopping in Highlands, NC. We were planning to go for a short hike up Whiteside Mountain, but it was terribly cold and windy so we decided to skip that and head for camp. We found a primitive site in the national forest and set up there. It was a bit colder that night, I think my thermometer read 29 before I went to bed. Monday morning we got up and packed, then headed for Blairsville and Blue Ridge and then split up and went home.

Pictures!
