All Volvo 4cly 2.3  8 valve engines are non interference.  No harm done. You still haven't told me if you can turn the camshaft with a wrench?Huh???

My old '81 Chevett snapped a timing belt doing 70 and I was sure I had wiped out the head, but it tuns out that it was non-interfearance, so I only had to replace the belt . . . and the water pump that was leaking on it and softened it up.

All engines that use a timing belt SHOULD be non-interferance . . . but then, I guess it's not in the best interest of an automobile manufacturer for 'em to make a vehicle that will last forever.   Undecided

Yeee haw. Got the belts off but I looks like I have to yank off the crank pulley to get the plastic cover off.  I'm thinkn to wreck the cover ...crank pulleys are often a pain .  Does that sound like a plan?  Sc

The crank pulley is a piece of cake, it should wiggle off after the bolts ate loose, it must come off to replace the. Belt

ok i will listen.   all I see is one pulley bolt.  some of the instructions I reas say there are 6 or so little bolts that hold the crank pully.    Can I stick a big wrench on the bolt and bump the starter to loosen it?  SC

Not a good idea. If I remember correctly, the little bolts hold the "V"belt pulley to the timing  belt sprocket, the large bolt holds the timing belt sprocket to the crankshaft. The timing belt sprocket also has a woodruff key along with the big bolt. THE "V" BELT PULLEY HAS TO COME OFF FIRST. The timing belt sprocket has raised  edges like the camshaft sprocket, so it would be kind of tough to try to slip the belt on without taking the pulley off.  You might take a good look at the water pump for any seepage or worn bearings. Now would be the time to replace the pump if there is any doubt about its conditions.  It could ruin your whole day if the pump sprung a leak after doing the whole belt thing. ALL those wonderful goodies would have to come right back off.

oK  PULLY IS OFF,  NO LITTLE BOLTS JUST THE BIG CENTER ONE.  I jabbed my palm  trying to get the tesnioner spring on. It hurt So I'm done for now.  my channel locks are not cutting it .    the crank  has a key on one side and 180 degrees a tooth that sticks out.  I  lined up the key space to the 2 lines on the belt,  that is were #1 is TDC.  I'm not completly sure I did this right.   The internet is not helping me out and volvo book is for older 240s

The new belt should have hash marks on the belt to line it up

Some how got it together.  It started. lots of extra bolts laying around. instructions were set the belt double line marks  to the left of the crankshaft key.

Seemed goofy to me.  drove around today.. still bog and slow .   Cheers
